It's a great day to learn at Cedar Ridge.

Fifth graders were on a learning path to reading today. While one class was on laptops for a reading assignment, another class was focused on storytime and the book "The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe." Other fifth graders were reading or writing as assigned by their teacher, ad fourth graders were focused on a math lesson.

Meanwhile, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students were getting excited about recess. But first they were learning about the letter "D." And fourth graders were rehearsing for a show next month in music class.

Cedar Ridge third graders are learning the importance of not just reading, but writing as well. Writing teaches children how to express themselves with their particular view point.

In one class, students were participating in an exercise in writing out sentences, and in the other classes, students were asked to write about things they might see in their backyard. In keeping with the October season, some of those things could be scary!

Today is the last day of the Cedar Ridge book fair in the school's media center.

Media specialist Becky Hines said the book fair has gone very well for the school and funds raised by the sales will support reading-related activities she hopes to offer throughout the coming year.

The book fair allowed kids to get everything from books to posters on subjects as diverse as dinosaurs to Halloween, of course. It is that time of year, after all.

While one side of the library was set aside for the book fair, Hines has decorated the other side with seasonal fare such as bats and books with a spooky theme.

It's a great time to read!

Cedar Ridge fifth graders dove into reading "Hoot" and they took it a step further and dissected owl pellets!

"My fifth graders recently finished reading 'Hoot' by Carl Hiaasen, a novel that sparked meaningful conversations about environmental conservation and the importance of protecting wildlife," said teacher Katrina Philpot.

Through the adventures of Roy and his friends, students learned about the challenges faced by Florida's endangered ground-burrowing owls and how individuals can make a difference when standing up for what they believe in.

"The story encouraged critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world," she said.

To extend their learning beyond the pages of the book, students participated in a hands-on owl pellet dissection activity. This exciting science investigation allowed them to become real-life researchers as they carefully examined owl pellets to discover what owls eat.

Students identified and sorted tiny bones and other remains of prey animals, gaining valuable insight into food chains, ecosystems, and the role owls play in their habitats.

Philpot said, "This engaging experience connected literature and science in a meaningful way, helping students deepen their understanding through observation, inquiry, and hands-on learning."
