lish language skills. We encourage our tutor/student pairs to meet at a local library for lessons, for about an hour a week. We also ask that tutors and students be able to commit to the program for one year. STUDENTS: To be eligible for a tutor, one needs to read at or below a 6th grade reading level, be at least 16 years of age, and live, work or go to school in Tulsa County. Simply call the literacy office at the number above to setup an appointment for a reading assessment and we’ll go from there! VOLUNTEER TUTORS: Tutors must be age 18 years of age, and have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. We provide a free, 10-hour training prepares new volunteer tutors to help adult learners improve their reading or English skills. At our location at 29th & Harvard, we house our collection of workbooks, games, leisure reading books, and learning technology—all available for checkout for you and your student(s). COMPUTERS: The literacy program also offers computer-based instruction to those who are interested in independent learning. Literacy Computer Labs, reserved solely for the use of our tutors and students, are located at the Rudisill Regional Library, Martin Regional Library, Hardesty Library, and Zarrow Library. We also have a staff member who can show tutors and students how to use the programs that best support their needs. READING ROADSHOW: We also have our own mobile library, the Reading Roadshow! This vehicle visits preselected day care centers, and brings the library directly to underserved early childhood communities that don’t have easy access to a community library. It may also be reserved for community events with an emphasis on young children and their parents. The Outreach Department is the home of the Bookmobile, Reading Roadshow, and the Book Truck. From visiting various communities with the Bookmobile, delivering materials to nursing homes and assisted living centers and the homebound, to attending special events with the Bookmobile, Roadshow, or Book Truck, there's always something going on.

The Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries was founded in 1957 and incorporated in 1968 as a nonprofit organization. Its purpose is to aid and promote the activities and goals of the Tulsa City-County Library system. The Friends organization fulfills its purpose through diverse programs and activities responsive to a wide range of needs and concerns. As a Friend, you help:
• Provide educational scholarships for library staff
• Furnish books for the "First Book" program to support family literacy
• Present a variety of Outreach programs at retirement centers through
the "Ambassadors"
• Plan & present "Books Sandwiched In," "Travels With Tulsans," and other special programs
• Facilitate "Great Decisions" adult discussion groups at libraries & other venues
• Advocate legislation and political support favorable to libraries
• Sponsor the annual Adult Creative Writing Contest
