One of the most effective firefighting tools comes with an environmental cost – and the Tumwater Fire Department is taking steps to leave it behind.

The Tumwater Fire Department is among 77 departments in Washington state that is disposing firefighting foam that contains PFAS.

PFAS firefighting foam is considered a “key suspected source” of all known PFAS contamination in Washington’s drinking water, according to the state Department of Ecology.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4-10! The City of Tumwater and Tumwater Fire Department are supporting Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. While these batteries are convenient, they can pose a fire risk if they are damaged, used incorrectly, or charged improperly.

The Tumwater City Council recently issued a proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Week and encouraging our community to learn more about lithium-ion battery safety.

Here are a few ways to charge safely:

• Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and use.
• Keep batteries and devices away from heat and anything that can catch fire while charging.
• Don’t use batteries or devices that are damaged, swollen or unusually hot.
• Don’t charge devices under a pillow, on a bed or on a couch where heat can build up.
• Dispose of damaged or unwanted batteries properly. Never put lithium-ion batteries in your household garbage or recycling.

Wet and windy weather is moving through Tumwater today.

The National Weather Service reports wind gusts across the region could reach 45 mph, with a 20–30% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Winds are expected to gradually ease overnight.

Like some of our neighbors, City of Tumwater offices are experiencing periodic power outages. As a result, some online and desk-based services and systems may be temporarily unavailable. Emergency response is not affected. Thank you for your patience as we work through these interruptions.

🌲 If a tree has fallen into a city street, sidewalk, or other public right-of-way, please call the city’s Public Works hotline at 360-754-4150.

Please stay safe and use extra caution while traveling.

Tumwater, Thurston County Medic One wants to hear from you.

What should emergency medical services look like in our community? What’s working well, and where are there opportunities to improve?

Thurston County Medic One is hosting a series of community town hall meetings this fall as part of a Community Needs Assessment focused on the future of EMS and emergent health care across Thurston County.

The Tumwater Town Hall is 1-3 p.m. Oct. 24 at Tumwater High School, 700 Israel Road SW.

This is an opportunity for Tumwater residents and other community members to share their experiences, needs, ideas and goals directly with the people working to plan the future of EMS in Thurston County.

Additional public town halls will be held in Lacey, Yelm, Olympia, Rochester, and Tenino throughout October and early November.

Separate listening sessions will also be held for EMS providers and healthcare partners. See the attached flyers for the complete schedule and details.

All meetings are in person. There will not be a virtual attendance option.

There will be a prescribed ecological burn today at 8410 Old Hwy 99 SE in Tumwater beginning around 11 a.m.

This burn is conducted by the Ecostudies Institute and Center for Natural Lands Management with support from Tumwater Fire. The burns are intentional and controlled and there will be trained firefighting staff on scene during the burn.

Prescribed burns are a tool used for habitat restoration and wildfire risk reduction. Permits are issued with consideration for the ecological need, the specific site, and weather conditions.
Drifting smoke near this site may distract drivers or slow traffic.

Tonight Mayor Dahlhoff and the City Council proclaimed Oct. 4-10 Fire Prevention Week.
Lithium Ion Batteries are found in many devices regularly present in our daily lives like laptops, tablets, phones, toys, e-bikes, among many others. Fire Chief Brian Hurley, alongside a group of fire fighters and emergency responders from the City, spoke on the importance of care when using lithium ion batteries and safety tips for these devices, such as

• Do not use damaged batteries or chargers,
• Use the cord that came with the device,
• Make sure to charge on a hard, flat surface, not on couches or chairs, etc.
