π§Ίπ₯ SAFETY TIP TUESDAY: DRYER FIRE PREVENTION π
It's Not Just the Lint Trap!
Doing laundry is part of everyday life, but did you know your clothes dryer could become a serious fire hazard if it isn't properly maintained?
Lint buildup, restricted airflow, and improper dryer use can lead to house fires. Turkey Volunteer Fire Department wants to remind everyone that a few simple precautions can help protect your home and family!
π₯ KEEP YOUR LAUNDRY ROOM FIRE SAFE!
π§Ί Clean the lint trap! Remove lint before or after every load. Lint is highly combustible and can accumulate quickly.
π¨ Don't forget the dryer vent! Lint can build up inside the exhaust duct and exterior vent, even when you regularly clean the lint trap. Inspect and clean the vent system at least once a year or more often if needed.
π Never leave your dryer unattended! Avoid running your dryer while sleeping or away from home. Keep clothing, boxes, and other combustible materials away from the appliance.
π When installing a new dryer, always ensure the proper dryer cord is paired to your dryer and outlet. When in doubt use a qualified electrician!
β οΈ Know the warning signs! Clothes taking longer to dry, excessive heat, weak airflow, or unusual burning odors could indicate a problem. Stop using the dryer until the issue is corrected.
π Beware of oily and greasy clothing! Clothing, towels, and rags contaminated with cooking oils, grease, or certain other oils can generate heat through oxidation and potentially ignite, even without an open flame. Never pile oily fabrics in a laundry hamper or leave them bundled together.
π¨ IF A DRYER FIRE OCCURS
Get everyone outside, close the door behind you if safe, and call 911 immediately. Never open the dryer door to investigate a suspected fire or attempt to remove burning clothing.
A few minutes of maintenance today could prevent a devastating fire tomorrow! ππ₯
