Dennis Steverson has been a lawyer for more than 33 years, having graduated from Stillman College then the University of Alabama Law School, Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1982. He began his career as an Assistant District Attorney with the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s office in 1982. Later, in 1989, he left the District Attorney’s office to start his own general practice law firm. In 2009, he w
as appointed by the Supreme Court of Alabama as a Special Circuit Court Judge to preside over the Drug Court (CLEAN) in Tuscaloosa County where he served until October 2015 when, before announcing his candidacy for District Attorney, he was required to resign. As a circuit court judge, he presided over civil and criminal jury and non-jury trials, a capital murder trial, organized jury panels, signed search warrants, performed marriage ceremonies, entered temporary restraining orders in domestic disputes, and conducted sentencing and probation hearings. In 1995, he was appointed a Special Probate Judge by the Probate Judge of Tuscaloosa County to preside over civil commitment hearings. Dennis Steverson was selected by five different local municipalities to preside as part-time municipal judge where he handled criminal misdemeanors and traffic violations. He also currently serves as a State Administrative Law Judge. During his career, he has been continuously and significantly involved in his community. He has served as president and board member on numerous boards of directors of non-profit organizations, including Hospice of West Alabama, A Woman’s Place Advisory Board, West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross (Chairman of the Board of Trustees), Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, Tuscaloosa Metro Young Men Christian Association, West Alabama Easter Seals, the Good Samaritan Clinic, Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreations (Finance Advisory Committee) and the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, as Campaign Chair, he led the West Alabama United Way to its largest capital campaign to that date. He serves the Woodland Park Church of Christ as an Elder, Superintendent of Education and Bible School teacher. He is married to Carolyn Steverson and they have two children, Dennis, Jr.
