Welcome to the board Ginger Pennington!

Here's what she has to say about the importance of literacy:

"Being able to read competently is the gateway to knowledge, jobs, income, personal growth and all the avenues to be successful in life. If I can help someone that’s very important to me"

Welcome to another of our newest board members, Vessie Simmons!

Read on to learn a little about Vessie and what community means to her:

"To me, community means connection, support, and shared responsibility. It’s about people coming together to uplift one another and create opportunities that benefit everyone. Community isn’t just where you live; it’s what you build through relationships, service, and impact. Through my career, volunteer work, and leadership roles, I strive to actively contribute to making my community stronger, more inclusive, and empowered.

Some of my proudest moments include expanding community partnerships that brought in new members and resources, leading financial literacy workshops for students and professionals, and being selected for leadership development opportunities such as Leadership College. I’ve also been recognized for community involvement, including participating in initiatives like the American Heart Walk and representing my organization meaningfully."

Thank you for joining in the fight against illiteracy!

Meet one of our newest board members, Jac Mixon!

"I have worked in Training, L&D, or Talent Development for 10 years, with a background in Instructional Design and eLearning. I strive to create impactful programs that foster both individual and organizational growth. I've had the privilege to spearhead some cool programs and develop some fun classes, especially Leadership Development, but my favorite is seeing the impact that the programs or classes have outside of the training room.

My passion for community and wanting to help people succeed was my primary motivation to join LCWA. Our community thrives when our people thrive, and LCWA's vision to build a community where everyone has the opportunity to function to a greater level aligns with my personal values perfectly. "

Welcome to LCWA 📚

(Re)Introducing... Literacy Champions!

Illiteracy should never be the reason someone’s future is limited. You can be the life-changing gift an adult learner needs.

Literacy Champions is the community engagement arm of LCWA providing direct support to adult learners. This week only, for every new monthly supporter, has pledged to give an additional $10!

Today, 1 in 4 adults in our region struggles with low literacy. This statistic represents real people with real dreams (parents, workers, caregivers, neighbors) who deserve the chance to reach their goals.

Your gift to the Literacy Council of West Alabama will directly support new initiatives, including our Literacy for ALL* Campaign, which provides uniquely designed, dignity-preserving, adult-focused learning books created just for our learners. Your support will also help us expand Little Libraries throughout the region and increase awareness of the urgent need for literacy education.

Together, we can help every adult discover their potential, unlock new opportunities, and step confidently into a brighter future.

Become a Champion here: https://givebutter.com/LCWAChampions

All Literacy Champions will be listed on our website.

Introducing... LITERACY FOR ALL

In our work to increase literacy rates among adults in West Alabama, we found that there are very few adult-centered resources for practicing reading skills. Adult Literacy Learners are often forced to choose children’s books to practice at home between tutoring sessions. This can be embarrassing and frustrating, so we are doing something about it.

Through Literacy For ALL we are creating books that allow adults to practice literacy skills with stories that are relevant to everyday life. Head to the link in the comments to join Literacy Champions and support Literacy for ALL!

Stay tuned for a first look at the books!📚
