As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we’re sharing one more important tip to help you charge your lithium-ion battery-powered devices safely.

Larger devices, such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools, often contain batteries that store significantly more energy. If one of these batteries fails, a fire can develop rapidly, creating dangerous conditions and making it difficult to escape. Charge these items outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.

We hope you’ve picked up some useful lithium-ion battery safety tips this week! Keep what you’ve learned in mind, and be sure to check back tomorrow. You never know when that knowledge might come in handy!

As Fire Prevention Week continues, we’re going to learn more about lithium-ion battery safety.

🔋 Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day, but how and where we charge them matters. Giving batteries room to release heat while charging can help prevent overheating and reduce the risk of a fire.

Charge these devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

From medical emergencies and traffic collisions to fires and rescues, OCFA personnel stand ready to serve our communities with professionalism, compassion, and a commitment to excellence.

Note: These are preliminary counts pending final review. Official incident response statistics will be published in the 2026 Annual Report. Division 4’s response areas include Tustin, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, and the surrounding unincorporated areas of Orange County.

Fire Prevention Week is here! This year, we’re highlighting an increasingly important fire safety issue in our homes: lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, from phones and laptops to e-bikes, power tools, and more. While these batteries are generally safe when used properly, damaged or failing batteries can overheat and cause fires.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

As we wrap up National Preparedness Month, let’s take what we’ve learned and share it with the people around us.

Talk with your family about the types of emergencies that could happen, what to do when they happen, and how everyone can play a part in being prepared. Include kids in simple preparedness activities like building a disaster supply kit and practicing your family emergency plan.

Preparedness doesn’t end when September does. Keep the conversation going, practice your plans, check your supplies, and encourage others to do the same.
