Often our first points of contact when we are struggling are our friends, family, or colleagues. If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, talking with them can be the difference in getting them the help they need. Talking to a loved one about mental health and su***de can be an uncomfortable and an uncertain topic but it is also one of the best ways to prevent it. We can all take action to have these conversations with someone who may be suicidal by using the five action steps from www.bethe1to.com

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. We'll be posting information throughout the month, and Lake County Public Health & Aspirus Lake View will be launching more mental health initiatives over the next 3 years as part of our Community Health Improvement Plan.

This week, Lake County & City of Two Harbors staff have been busy installing temporary curb extensions and enhanced crosswalk markings at the intersections of 7th Street and 4th and 5th Avenues in Two Harbors.

These changes are meant to make it safer for people walking and biking to cross the street. These intersections were chosen because many kids and families use them to get to Minnehaha Elementary. Seventh Street is also a well-traveled route to downtown. Past studies and law enforcement have identified a need for safety improvements.

The curb extensions will be removed before winter so snowplows can get through. Based on community feedback and how drivers respond, they may be installed again next year. If they are successful, sidewalk curb extensions could eventually become a permanent part of the road when it's rebuilt.

Lake County Public Health, Lake County Highway Department and the City of Two Harbors collaborated on this project, with support from Minnehaha leadership. Funding for the project was provided by the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership. Visit https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/SrCEfMA7CX to provide feedback.
