Well, Well, Well

One of the perks of being stationed at Split Rock was having running water. Originally, water was pumped from Lake Superior to the site. During the colder months, however, the above-ground pipes would freeze, leaving the houses without a reliable water supply.

To solve the problem, a well was drilled in 1939. It took more than a month to drill 301 feet down through the rock to reach water.

A second well was drilled in 1961 when the first well proved to be inadequate. This well reached 220 feet through the rock, providing a more reliable source of water for the site.

Who knew it could be so difficult to get fresh drinking water with Lake Superior right outside your door!

Fall doesn’t last long on the North Shore, so if you’ve been thinking about a visit, now is the time.

Come experience the beauty of Split Rock Lighthouse this fall.

Original Artifacts: Kohler Generator

At Split Rock Lighthouse, we have a number of original artifacts. One of these pieces can be seen in the station’s oil house. This gas driven Kohler generator was purchased in 1940 for $1,500. It was installed in the fog signal building as a back-up power source for the newly electrified fog signal and lighthouse.

October is here.

There’s something different about the North Shore this time of year. The days get shorter, the air gets a little crisper, and Lake Superior starts to feel just a little more wild.

It’s the season for quiet trails, changing skies, and that unmistakable feeling that summer is behind us and something new is beginning.

Come experience October on the North Shore—and make a stop at Split Rock Lighthouse while you’re here.

Choose the North Shore.
