My US 98/ TAFB FDOT is elevating the U.S. 98 travel lanes above the Tyndall Drive/Airey Avenue and Louisiana Avenue intersections on Tyndall AFB.

This is the official page for the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) U.S. 98 flyover at Tyndall AFB. Construction began in Fall 2019 on the $21 million effort to improve mobility on U.S. 98 and enhance security for Tyndall Air Force Base. The project focuses on an approximately one-mile section of U.S. 98 centered on the installation’s main gate at the Airey Avenue/Tyndall Drive intersection. The two U.S. 98 travel lanes will be elevated above Tyndall’s main entrance. Further east, a second overpass will be constructed above Louisiana Avenue to allow base traffic to travel between the support facilities on the south side of the installation and the flight line on the north side without the need to pass through the security checkpoint at the main gate. It is estimated that more than 36,000 drivers travel this section of U.S. 98 daily. The project is a collaborative effort involving FDOT, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and Tyndall’s 325 Fighter Wing. Your participation is welcome, but comments must comply with the policy found in the "Notes" section of this page. General Inquiries:

Whether walking or driving, paying attention at intersections can make all the difference.

Pedestrians should follow traffic signs and signals, cross at crosswalks or intersections when available, and continue watching for vehicles while crossing. Drivers should slow down when approaching crosswalks, be prepared to stop when turning, and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

No matter how you travel, staying alert helps make the road safer for everyone.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month.

Whether walking to school, crossing an intersection or heading through a parking lot, pedestrians and motorists often share the same spaces.

Drivers should stay alert, watch for pedestrians and use extra caution near crosswalks and intersections. Pedestrians should use designated crossings when available, remain visible and stay aware of surrounding traffic.

A tire blowout can happen suddenly, making it important to know how to respond before you find yourself in the situation.

Regularly checking tire pressure, tread depth and overall tire condition can reduce the risk of tire failure. If a blowout does occur while driving, staying calm and maintaining control of the vehicle are key to safely getting off the roadway.

Roadwork 101: What happens after concrete is placed on a bridge deck?

Placing and finishing concrete is only part of constructing a bridge deck. The concrete must be properly cured to develop the strength and durability needed for the finished structure.

During the wet curing process, crews lightly spray water over the newly placed concrete and cover it with saturated fabric to retain moisture as it hardens. Depending on the project, bridge deck concrete may undergo wet curing for seven to 10 days.

This process supports proper concrete strength development to create a strong and durable bridge deck.

Florida’s Move Over Law is designed to protect law enforcement officers, first responders, utility workers and others stopped along the roadside.

When approaching or passing a vehicle stopped on the shoulder, drivers should move over one lane when it is safe to do so. If moving over is not possible, drivers should slow down as required by law while passing.

According to NHTSA, nearly half of car seats are installed incorrectly.

Today is National Seat Check Saturday, an opportunity for parents and caregivers to confirm their child is in the right seat and that it is properly installed and secured.

Certified technicians are available to provide guidance on selecting and installing car seats and booster seats based on a child’s age and size.

What does it take to construct the bridge surface vehicles will one day travel across?

This edition of Roadwork 101 follows a bridge deck pour from preparation through curing.

1. Preparing the deck: Before concrete placement begins, crews install reinforcing steel, also known as “rebar,” to strengthen the bridge deck.

2. Placing concrete: Concrete is pumped onto the deck using a “boom” to distribute it efficiently and accurately.

3. Leveling & smoothing : A transverse mechanical screed moves across the deck to level and finish the newly placed concrete to the required thickness and grade.

4. Concrete curing: Once in place, the concrete undergoes a wet-curing process. Saturated fabric is placed over the surface for several days to facilitate moisture retention for maximum strength and durability.

Each step plays an important role in building a strong, durable bridge surface.

Rail Safety Week is Sept. 21–27, bringing attention to safe decisions around railroad tracks and crossings.

Trains can approach more quickly and quietly than expected, and cannot stop quickly to avoid a vehicle or pedestrian on the tracks. At railroad crossings, motorists should obey warning signs and signals, never drive around lowered gates, and make sure there is enough room to completely clear the tracks before crossing.

Rain can quickly change driving conditions by reducing visibility and making roadways more difficult to navigate.

Allowing additional following distance provides more time to react to changing traffic conditions, while slower speeds can reduce the risk of losing control on wet pavement. Florida law also requires motorists to use their headlights when windshield wipers are in use.
