Your child knows who they’d like to be friends with. They just don’t know what to say after “hi.”

That space between saying hello and becoming friends is where a lot of kids get stuck.

Start with one question: “Who would you like to get to know better?”

Then talk it through together:

Where do you usually see them?

What do you have in common?

What could you talk about next time?

This time of year, Halloween makes it easy. “What are you going to be for Halloween?” is a great way to start a conversation.

At Simply Social Kids, kids and teens practice these exact steps during games, activities, and conversations with peers.

Costume? Check. Candy bag? Check. Someone to go trick or treating with? That part can be harder.

The social side of Halloween can take a little planning. Help your child practice inviting a friend, talk through what to do if that friend already has plans, and give them words to use when they need a break.

One idea: invite neighbors over for pizza or snacks before trick or treating. When it’s time to head out, everyone goes together, and your child is already part of the group.

And if a big night of trick or treating isn’t their thing, having one friend over for a Halloween movie is a fun way to connect, too.

If making friends feels hard for your child, our social skills groups can help. Book a free phone call with Nadine to talk about your child and find a group that fits: https://calendly.com/simplysocialkids/schedule-free-trial

Your child says, “I have no friends.” The teacher says, “They get along with everyone.” Who’s right?

Both can be true. A child can chat with classmates all day and still go home feeling like no one would call them a friend.

Here’s how to get a clearer picture:

At the conference, ask the teacher for specific examples of when your child connects with peers.

At home, ask your child, “Who do you feel most comfortable with?” or “Who would you like to get to know better?”

Those answers give you a starting point.

At Simply Social Kids, our weekly groups give kids and teens a place to get to know peers, with expert coaches there to support them.

Messages like this one are why we do what we do.

Nicki was part of our groups for years, and her mom Corinne recently wrote to us about what that time meant for her family:

“Just think about how important your work is, Nadine! You changed our lives. Nicki will never forget her time at Simply Social Kids, and she made friendships and connections that will last a lifetime.”

Thank you, Corinne and Nicki, for letting us share your story. đź’śđź’š

“They get along with everyone.” Great to hear at a conference. But is it the whole story?

It’s one of the most common things parents hear from teachers, and it’s good news. It just doesn’t always tell you whether your child has a real friend.

Next time you hear it, ask a few follow up questions:

Does my child seek out certain classmates?

Do other kids seek my child out?

Who does my child talk with when they get to choose?

The answers help you see whether your child has friendly interactions, closer friendships, or could use some support getting to know peers.

At Simply Social Kids, games and shared activities give kids and teens real practice joining in, having conversations, and building friendships over time.

Your child’s teacher sees something you don’t: who your child spends time with all day.

Parent teacher conferences are about more than grades. Here is one question worth asking:

“Who does my child spend time with, and do those friendships seem to go both ways?”

The answer can tell you a lot. Does your child join in at recess? Have someone to sit with at lunch? Connect with classmates when the day isn’t structured?

If friendships are hard for your child right now, we can help. At Simply Social Kids, kids and teens meet in weekly groups to get to know peers and practice friendship skills with support from our expert coaches.

“Your child is doing well in class” is reassuring to hear. But does that tell you whether they have someone to sit with at lunch or feel welcome when it’s time for group work?

Parent-teacher conferences are coming up, and it’s worth making room for questions about friendships alongside academics.

In this video, I share six things to ask about, including classroom interactions, group work, friendships, and recess. I also explain why telling your child’s teacher that you welcome honest feedback can open up a more helpful conversation.

If your appointment ends before you get to these questions, you can always follow up by email.

Watch before your conference, and save this post so you have it handy.
