⭐Attention Firewise Communities: Input Due October 31!⭐

Do you live in a Firewise Community (FWC)? Find out by clicking the link below.

If you do live in an FWC, please report your volunteer hours for the past year (any time you personally spent reducing wildfire risk on your property or in your community), along with any cash you spent for wildfire preparedness on purchases, contractors, or landscapers, by filling out this form: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/6dbec760e2424c81866e0495e556b4e0. (The form is also available on the FWC page.)

Reporting your personal investments helps your neighborhood maintain its FWC status, and can help inspire others with how much can be accomplished for wildfire preparedness.

🔥A Story from the Feliz Fire:

It's all about being prepared ahead of time! The successful outcome of the 872-acre Feliz Fire near Hopland in August (zero lives or homes lost, and containment west of Hwy 101) was thanks to prepared, quick, and effective action by our local fire districts, including those from neighboring counties, and CAL FIRE.

But great neighborhood preparedness – creating a Firewise Community, developing an alternate evacuation route, holding a neighborhood Evacuation Game event, doing residential fuel reduction (which allowed firefighters to focus more on the fire than on protecting homes), and promoting evacuation readiness – also played a very important role when the fire came close.

“In an emergency,” says Bernadette Byrne, "your brain kind of flatlines and you're in a total fight or flight (mode)." The blogpost linked below gives a firsthand example of how to avoid panic paralysis when a wildfire is approaching.

The Redwood Valley Rancheria was evacuated and lost two homes in the 2017 Redwood Complex Fires. Since then, they have been proactively planning for better outcomes in case of future wildfires. 🚒🔥

Our crew and equipment joined them for a Community Work Party in early June, to successfully reduce densely overgrown vegetation near homes on the edge of the neighborhood. 🦺🪚🌲

The Albion Little River Fire Safe Council has created a thoughtful Welcome Packet to orient new neighbors to realities and resources related to their wildfire-prone environment. 🚒🔥

The packet includes information on emergency alert systems, defensible space, home-hardening, evacuation planning, Red Flag days, and much more. 🚨They also shared the guide with local real estate agents to give to new community members. 🏠👨‍👩‍👧

We applaud this example of proactive community preparedness, and encourage other local groups to do the same. Well done, Albion Little River FSC!
