Press Release

Union City Area Wastewater Facilities Responding to Historic Rainfall.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City and Village of Union City would like to provide an update regarding the ongoing effects of the significant rainfall that has impacted our community over the past 7 to 10 days.

The greater Union City area has experienced an extraordinary amount of precipitation during this period. While our community has weathered these conditions as well as could be expected under the circumstances, we are currently managing flooding conditions at two wastewater treatment facilities.

Public works and utility personnel have been working around the clock to mitigate the impacts of this event and maintain wastewater operations. As required by state law, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) have been formally notified of the situation.

Crews are actively processing excess wastewater and implementing response measures designed to return the facilities to normal operation as quickly and safely as conditions allow. Efforts will continue until all overflows have ceased and the system is fully stabilized.

Residents who observe standing water on their property and believe it may contain sewage are encouraged to contact the appropriate City or Village office. Response crews will investigate reported concerns and address them as soon as practicable, prioritizing situations that pose the greatest potential risk to public health and safety.

We appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation of our residents during this challenging weather event. Updates will be provided as conditions change and additional information becomes available.

For questions or to report potential sewage-related concerns, please contact your local City or Village office.

The City and Village of Union City extend their sincere thanks to the utility, public works, and emergency response personnel who continue to work tirelessly to protect public health and critical infrastructure throughout this event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Randolph Eastern Schools & City of Union City Announces Crosswalk Changes on North Plum Street Near Union City Jr/Sr High School & North Side Elementary School

UNION CITY, INDIANA – As part of the ongoing paving project on North Plum Street, the City of Union City has completed a realignment of pedestrian crosswalks in front of Union City Community Schools to improve student and pedestrian safety.
The new designated crosswalk locations are now located at:

• North Plum Street and Park Avenue
• North Plum Street and North Walnut Street
• N Plum Street and Cadwalder Street

The previous crosswalks located near Carter Street have been removed following a safety review. Those crossings directed students into areas where vehicles enter and exit the school parking lot, creating potential conflicts between pedestrians and traffic.
The goal of the crosswalk realignment is to keep students on sidewalks for as much of their route as possible and direct them to safer, signalized intersection crossing points when accessing the school campus.

"Student safety was the primary consideration in this decision. By relocating the crosswalks to nearby intersections, children can remain on designated sidewalks and avoid crossing in areas where school traffic is entering and exiting parking facilities.

The City and RESC recognizes that this change may require adjustments to familiar walking routes and apologizes for both the inconvenience and the late notice regarding the modification. However, officials believe the new configuration will provide a safer and more predictable process for pedestrians crossing North Plum Street.

Parents, students, and motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new crosswalk locations and exercise extra caution during school arrival and dismissal times.

The City of Union City appreciates the community's patience and cooperation as these improvements are implemented to enhance safety for everyone traveling to and from the school.
