🔥 Heating Season Is Here, Middleton! Let’s Keep It Safe. 🔥
As the nights get colder and wood stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters fire up across town, the Middleton Fire Department wants to remind everyone that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires. A few simple steps can protect your home and your family all winter long.
🚨 First and most important: working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives.
Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and deadly, and any fuel-burning appliance can produce it. A working smoke alarm gives you the precious minutes you need to get out.
✅ Test your alarms monthly
✅ Replace batteries at least once a year
✅ Have alarms on every level of your home and sleeping areas
✅ Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms per the manufacturer’s date (usually 5 to 7 years)
🪵 Wood Stove & Fireplace Safety
🧹 Clean it annually: Have your chimney cleaned and inspected every year by a professional chimney sweep to remove flammable creosote buildup.
🔥 Burn it right: Use only dry, well-seasoned hardwoods like oak, maple, beech, or ash. Never burn trash, plastics, or large amounts of paper.
📏 Give it space: Keep furniture, firewood, decorations, and anything that can burn at least 3 feet (36 inches) away from wood stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters.
🪣 Handle ashes with care: Dampen and cool ashes, then store them only in a dedicated metal can with a lid. Never use cardboard boxes, paper bags, or compost piles. Ashes can stay hot for days!
🚒 Know the Signs of a Chimney Fire
⚠️ A loud roaring or rumbling sound, like a freight train
⚠️ A hot, burning smell
⚠️ Dense smoke
If you suspect a chimney fire: GET OUT and CALL 911 immediately. Do not go back inside. Our firefighters have thermal imaging and specialized equipment to check your flue and structure safely.
📘 New Hampshire enforces updated fire safety standards, including NFPA 211 for chimneys and vents. Learn more from the NH Division of Fire Safety: https://www.firemarshal.dos.nh.gov/fire-codes-adopted-nh

It is officially FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026!
To raise awareness during Fire Prevention Week and promote
lithium-ion battery safety, this years theme is all about charging safely. Help us spread the word that everyday actions can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or ones
approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can
damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds,
couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can
cause a battery to overheat.
Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is
warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or
color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away
from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can
overheat and start a fire.
Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools
outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These
batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they
fail.

Never Forget — 25 Years

Today, September 11th, marks 25 years since our nation lost 2,977 innocent lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93 — among them 343 members of the FDNY who ran toward danger to save others.

The Middleton Fire Department pauses today to honor their sacrifice, along with the police officers, EMS providers, and civilians who gave everything that morning. We remember those we lost, we honor those who responded, and we carry forward the values they embodied: courage, service, and putting others before self.

To the families who still carry this loss, and to every first responder who has answered the call in the years since — we stand with you today and always.

Never forget. 🇺🇸

September is National Preparedness Month!
https://www.ready.gov/stand-ready
Each September, FEMA’s Ready Campaign celebrates National Preparedness Month. Since 2004, the campaign has taken the month to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies. The month is a great time to take small steps to make a big difference in being prepared.
• Stay informed: Sign up for emergency alerts in your community and have a way to monitor National Weather Service reports.
• Have a plan: Download the family emergency plan at ReadyNH.gov and take time to complete it. Include all family members in your plan, including pets and children.
• Make a kit: Download the shopping list on ReadyNH.gov. Look around your house for items you may already have, and shop discount stores and sales for low-cost options.
• Get involved: Join a local volunteer group and work with your neighbors to create a directory that includes contact information and professions or specialty skills.

This morning at 7:43 AM, Middleton Fire was dispatched to the lumber mill for a reported fire. Thanks to a quick response, the fire was contained to a small building and brought under control before it could spread further.
We want to extend our sincere thanks to our mutual aid partners — Farmington Fire, Milton Fire, and Wakefield Fire — for their assistance on scene, as well as New Durham Fire, Wolfeboro Fire, and Rochester Fire, who were initially dispatched to support operations. Incidents like this highlight just how valuable these mutual aid relationships are. They allow neighboring departments to share resources, equipment, and personnel, ensuring our communities are protected even when an incident calls for more than one department can provide alone. We're grateful for the strength of these partnerships and the dedication of every department that responded today.
