As the Universal City Pumpkin Patch nears its close, we wanted to share a special video created by one of our own.

This year, the idea came about to dedicate the Patch of Hope to Lori and Glenn Putt, honoring Lori’s incredible 26 years as a breast cancer survivor and their continued dedication to our community.

To help bring this vision to life, our A-Shift crews got to work painting pumpkins for the dedication, while the wonderful UC Parks Partners brought everything together with a beautiful display.

We are grateful to have been a small part of this meaningful tribute and want to thank everyone who helped make it possible.

Take a moment to watch this special video highlighting the Patch of Hope and the people who made it happen! Thank you A-Shift for your incredible workđź©·

Thoughts and prayers with the brothers and sisters of the Durham Fire Department.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Thankfully, the weather held off long enough for our community to come out and enjoy a great day at the station!

The community had the opportunity to catch a Fire Prevention Show, watch a Vehicle Extrication Demonstration, tour the station, check out our apparatus, and spend some time with some of the best around!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out and spent part of their day with us and for making this year’s Open House a success! 🚒🔥

This past week, LT. Jendrusch and FF. Martinez had the opportunity to attend the biennial Women in Fire Conference in Austin, Texas!

The conference brought together fire service professionals from across the country for several days of hands-on training, leadership development, networking, and education focused on strengthening and advancing the fire service.

We’re proud to have members who continue to seek opportunities to learn, grow, and bring new knowledge and experiences back to our department and community. Thank you to LT. Jendrusch and FF. Martinez for representing our department and continuing to invest in their professional development!
