If you are looking to develop a co-op in your town or city, we’re here to help! The concept of third party delivery is here to stay, but restaurants need to turn the national for-profit model into a local public utility to protect restaurants from tech investors looking to take as much money out of the restaurants as possible. LoCo Co-ops was created by Jon Sewell, a restaurant owner in Iowa City, Iowa. Sewell started CHOMP Delivery months after behemoth online and mobile food-ordering company Grubhub bought the OrderUp! service operating in Iowa City and proposed to double commission rates it charged restaurants in the area. A former health care executive and owner of a restaurant in Iowa City, Sewell saw an opportunity to set up a model familiar to him in the health care setting: a business owned by some of the main stakeholders (in that case, hospitals using medical services such as a mobile MRI machine, for example). Sewell approached some of
the other restaurant proprietors in town to become co-owners of CHOMP Delivery. After refining the concept with the launch of a second delivery co-op (Noco Nosh) in Fort Collins, Colorado, Sewell founded LoCo Co-ops to create franchise opportunities bringing the model across the United States and internationally. Furthermore, we believe that restaurant owners themselves should be involved not only in the decision-making of the delivery of their food, but they should also be charged commission rates that are fair and sustainable – not the current national rates, which are way above most independent restaurant margins. Lastly, LoCo believes that food delivery is an extension of the onsite service restaurants provide. Since there are so many issues with the customer service provided by other third party delivery companies in the market today, LoCo focuses on customer experience and aims for total customer satisfaction, just as any restaurant would.
