I've had several people reach out to me asking about this CCSD89 School Board Race, and what do I know about the candidates. Here is what I've been telling people:
From grade school and Scouting, I've known Laura Wilmarth Tyna and her family for over 10 years. She is a brilliant, thoughtful, caring person who loves her family and community and naturally helps others. She's worked in education, volunteered, and been on several boards. When discussing the possibility of running for the Board, her first thought was making sure she could dedicate the time to serve effectively. Laura fully has my support.
I've know Ariel Steffens and her family through Scouting for several years as well. Her passion for her family, and involvement in our community are to be admired. Accomplished in her own right, she thought long and hard about running for the board. Caring to not take away from her family, but dedicated to the betterment of the district, she chose to run. Ariel has my full support.
With experience and tenure, Steve Neurauter has faithfully served the D89 Board of Education over the past 4 years, where I met him. Having watched his calm demeanor, thoughtful consideration on topics, and decision making, he has been a great addition to the board. He's also been willing to endure the past few years of passionate flare-ups, a pandemic, and national politics trying to push into our community, all the while keeping calm and keeping the students at the center of the discussion. I fully support Steve's re-election.
As for the other candidates, I've not met them. Both come from careers in education:
Lindsey Cowles' most recent being 2+ years Sr. Director of Academics & 6+ years Manager of Instructional Development with Noble Schools Charter School Network in Chicago.
Alex Mayster's most recent being 1+ year Executive Director of Communications in Hinsdale D86, 2+ years Executive Director of Communications in Naperville D203 & 4+ years Director of Communications in Evergreen Park D124.
This election cycle is NOT like the last one. I feel no threat to our public school system in D89 like I did the last cycle. As far as I am aware, we have no disruptor or threat to our student's rights like we ended up with two cycles ago.
Look up the candidate's sites and pages and learn about who aligns best with you. Check out what's going on with the Glenbard D87 School Board Election.
You don't have to research all weekend. You can get a feel by searching a little, reaching out to friends who view community and education the way you do.
BUT, as we've seen, ELECTIONS MATTER. Those who are brought into the public system can make decisions that impact YOU.
DO NOT take a back seat because things seem quiet.
The Milton Township Race is a concern. Dig into that. Find facts. Don't rely on me, or any social media post, that doesn't have facts and actual references to back it up. We've seen the rhetoric, misinformation, and anger. These elections impact people's lives and your tax dollars.
But remember, go vote on Tuesday...or before, unless you already have... 🇺🇸 🌞
