The Detroit News has spent a decade ripping into Donald Trump and MAGA. It's never once endorsed him — not in 2016, not in 2020, not in 2024. So when that same editorial board turned its full attention to Democrat Abdul El-Sayed this week, the verdict landed with extra weight: '𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦.'

The board's biggest complaint wasn't policy — it was concealment. El-Sayed has 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 that reportedly questioned his attitude toward America after 9/11, and scrubbed roughly 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬 that paint an unflattering picture of his views. The News didn't mince words: '𝘈 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭.'

The editorial also flagged El-Sayed's ideological alignment with America- and Jew-hating influencer Hasan Piker, and his friendliness with the party's democratic-socialist wing — warning he'd '𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘺'𝘴 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨' and join the ranks of Michigan's anti-Israel delegation. Even his signature campaign credential took a hit: '𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘌𝘭-𝘚𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯, 𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦.'

By contrast, the News called Mike Rogers '𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳' — a seven-term congressman with a background in the FBI and cybersecurity whose '𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦'𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴.' '𝘔𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘯'𝘴 𝘜.𝘚. 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵,' the board wrote, while El-Sayed '𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯'𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴.'

This isn't a paper carrying water for Trump — the same editorial insisted his policies '𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥' Michigan, before conceding '𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱.' That's how bad El-Sayed's own paper trail looks: even his hometown's most reliably anti-Trump voice couldn't stomach him. The race is still 𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 — RealClearPolling's average has El-Sayed up two points — which makes this endorsement a live gr***de in the final stretch.
