"Do you remember the end of “Finding Nemo” when Marlin thinks that Nemo has died and he tells Dory to just go home?
Dory cries when she hears her friend say that she needs to leave him and tells him, “no one’s ever stuck with me for so long before. .. I remember things better with you. .. I look at you and I can feel it. I look at you and I’m home.”
This scene struck me. During a Disney movie from 2003, the Lord spoke to me.
First, Marlin was in the pit of despair. He believed that he had lost his son forever (after already losing his wife and other children). He didn’t think that there was any hope left for his life, but his hope was going to be restored just minutes later when he sees his son and realizes that he is alive!
Sometimes, when we are in the very pit of hopelessness, our victory and hope are just around the corner.
Secondly, Marlin put all of his time, effort and energy into looking for his lost son. He lost his wife and other children and he was not ready to lose this child. He was on a difficult, heart aching journey. While he was on this journey, he finds an unsuspecting friend. This friend helps him along the way, but we find out later that Marlin was helping Dory feel a sense of home and security the whole time. Marlin’s presence alone helped Dory, a fish with short term memory, remember.
In the middle of our own struggles, our own difficulties, our own pain, we can bring peace and a sense of home to others. When we have joy and peace that surpasses understanding, we can shine that to others.
Sometimes we help people in ways that we are not even aware of.
Right now, the world is feeling this struggle we are all in. People across the globe are feeling the effects of this struggle to varying degrees.
So the question is really not about what, but how you do things.
During this time, and when this is over, how can you help others?
How can you bring a sense of peace to others, even in the midst of your own struggles?
How can you share the joy that you have in the middle of sorrow?
How are you looking toward the hope and joy that is sure to come, even when you can’t see how or when it will come?"
