“Have you ever wondered what’s inside the TPD helicopter? 🚁

Take a look with Officer Romero as he gives an overview of the equipment inside the helicopter. Learn how the pilot and tactical flight officer work in tandem with officers on the ground to respond efficiently to incidents, locate missing people and track suspects, and enhance public safety throughout our community.”

TPD employs some of the most highly skilled and experienced FAA-certified mechanics in the industry. The personnel assigned to the Air Support Unit work closely as a team to ensure minimal aircraft downtime between scheduled and unscheduled maintenance intervals. TPD’s helicopters offer ground units with incredible search and observation capabilities for both day and night operations. This greatly enhances public safety and contributes to our mission of protecting and serving our community. Did you know that in 2024, the Air Support Unit responded to over 2150 911 calls-for-service, with an average on-scene response time of less than two minute?”

Fini Flight - an aviation tradition marking a pilots final flight.

Today marked the fini flight of Chief Pilot Brett Lemas. Brett, a native of Tucson, has served his community for well over 20 years. He started his career in law enforcement when he became a dispatcher for the South Tucson Police Department at the age of 18. From there he became a Community Service Officer and a commissioned Police Officer with the Tucson Police Department. While a patrol officer in Operations Division South Officer Lemas became an auxiliary Tactical Flight Officer with the Air Support Unit in 2005 before finally coming to the unit full time in 2011 to begin his training as a helicopter pilot. In early 2022 Brett became the units Chief Pilot.

Brett wore many hats during his tenure with the police department, but most importantly he was a trusted colleague and he was our friend.

Well done Brett, enjoy your retirement with your family. You've earned it.
