The place that put Burgaw on the map!

Burgaw is a railroad town that owes its very existence to the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad Company that routed its tracks across the Burgaw Creek, where a small cross-roads trading post had heretofore existed.

In October, 1836, the work was begun on the tracks of the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad, later to be called Wilmington and Weldon and Atlantic Coast Line/Seaboard Railroads. The original company was chartered in January, 1834, and when the last spike was driven on March 7, 1840, this railroad line was the longest in the world, 161½ miles.

"In January, 1854, the post office department began to call this location, Burgaw Depot. The small trading post had heretofore been called simply "Cypress Grove." The depot is the oldest in the state circa 1850 and is part of the North Carolina Civil War Trail.

**Event Update**

BURGAW – The Town of Burgaw’s Annual Autumn Fest has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather. Parks, Recreation, and Tourism staff made the decision this morning.

“We have closely monitored the forecast for several days; it has remained consistent, calling for rain and high winds through most of the event time frame. There are a lot of moving pieces involved with the event, so weather poses a huge disruption to our overall success and ability to provide a full experience,” said Cody Suggs, Burgaw Parks & Recreation Director.

The annual Graveyard 5K and Boo-gaw 1-mile race will still be held on Fremont Street starting at 8:00 am.

Parks and Recreation staff thank all for their continued support of our annual programs and look forward to hosting Autumn Fest again in 2027.

Contact Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at (910) 300-6401 or [email protected] for further information.
