🎃🐾 HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY REMINDER 🐾🎃

Halloween is full of tricks and treats, but the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office wants to remind our community that some festive fun can be scary—or even dangerous—for our four-legged family members! Keep your pets "pawsitively" safe this spooky season with these quick tips:

🍫 Stash the Candy: Keep chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free candies (which often contain toxic xylitol) completely out of paw's reach. Stick to pet-safe treats only!

🚪 Secure the Door: With trick-or-treaters constantly ringing the doorbell, it’s easy for a spooked pet to dart outside. Keep them in a quiet, secure room inside the house away from the front door.

🏷️ ID Your Furry Friends: Make sure your pets are wearing a secure collar with updated ID tags, and ensure their microchip registration info is current just in case they manage to slip out.

👻 Creative but Comfortable: If you dress your pet up, ensure the costume doesn't restrict their breathing, sight, or movement. Avoid outfits with small dangling pieces that could become choking hazards.

🔥 Watch the Decor: Keep lit jack-o'-lanterns, glow sticks, and fake cobwebs out of reach. Curious tails can easily knock over a candle or get tangled up.

Let's work together to make this a safe, happy, and spook-tacular Halloween for the whole family! 🍂👻

📲Please contact your local emergency vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 if you suspect your pet has ingested candy or other item.

💔 Standard shelter life is so loud, and I am just a very small, very scared girl. 🐾

My name is Willow, and to be honest, I’m not used to being in a place like this. The loud noises, the echoing barks, and the unfamiliar faces make my heart race. I spend a lot of my time tucked away, wishing I could disappear into the corner because the world feels a little too big and frightening right now. 💛

I’m so incredibly grateful because Deputy Wimberly noticed how overwhelmed I’ve been feeling. He chose me as the Pet Pick of the Week because he wants to help me find my forever family and get out of this scary shelter as quickly as possible.
If you have a calm home, a little patience, and a lot of love to spare, please come meet me. I might need a second to trust you, but I promise I'm trying my best. ❤️

More than anything, I’m waiting for the day someone will walk up to my kennel, look past my shaking, and take me home. I dream about finding a quiet, peaceful space where I can finally let out a big sigh of relief. I don't ask for much—just a gentle hand to pet my head and a patient heart to show me that I’m safe. 💗

Even though I’m timid in here, my hound nose still loves the fresh air! I really like to explore outside, and my absolute biggest wish is to have a grassy yard to call my very own, where I can sniff around at my own pace without any fear. 🏡

✨ Please share my story so my gentle person can find me! ✨

We remember members of our law enforcement family whose service and sacrifice continue to inspire us. Though they left us too soon, their legacy remains deeply rooted in our office and our community. We recognize those that were lost in September and October.

September:
🕊James Knight Jr., Sheriff
6/28/1918 - 9/9/1978
Sheriff Knight served as the Sheriff of Nansemond County in the 1960s until 1971. He also served in the U.S. Army in WWII.

🕊John Riddick, Deputy
6/19/1927 - 9/10/2012
Deputy Riddick was one of the first African American deputies in the Nansemond County Sheriff's office, ushering in a new wave of law enforcement professionals. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was an active member of the Suffolk School Board for several years.

October:
🕊William Cole
? - 10/16/1991
Deputy William "Bill" E. Cole served the Suffolk Sheriff's Office for 14 years until his retirement. We recognize his service and contribution to the community.

🕊Carter Shirley Hicks
12/16/1943 - 10/26/2012
Deputy Hicks served the Suffolk Sheriff's Office for 13 years until his retirement. He previously served with the Suffolk Police Department, too. We recognize his service to our community.

We honor them. We remember them. And we carry their legacy forward.

🔥 WE DID IT AGAIN! 🔥

Together, we raised OVER $700 for Special Olympics Virginia during our October campaign with Hardee's!

This year’s success was made even more special by the incredible support and presence of our community partners! 🙌 A huge thank-you to the Suffolk Police Department, Suffolk Fire & Rescue, Western Tidewater Regional Jail, Suffolk Probation & Parole, Suffolk Public Schools’ Ryan Dickens, City Councilman John Rector, and Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Narendra Pleas for joining us in support of this amazing cause.

We also had a very special guest: one of Suffolk’s very own Special Olympics Virginia athletes, Benjamin Gardner, along with his wonderful family! Your presence brought even more joy and meaning to this campaign, reminding us all why we come together to support inclusion, acceptance, and the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Virginia. 🏅

🥓☕ Every biscuit, every cup of coffee, and every generous donation helped fuel the flame. 🔥

THANK YOU, SUFFOLK, FOR HELPING US MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Happy National First Responders Day! 🚨 Today, we pause to recognize the incredible men and women who stand ready to answer the call, day or night, rain or shine.

It takes a special kind of dedication to serve on the front lines of public safety. Today, we extend our deepest gratitude to every branch of our first responder family:

• 🚓 Law Enforcement: For holding the line, protecting our neighborhoods, and choosing a life of service to keep us safe.

• 🎧 911 Dispatchers/Operators: For being the calm voice in the chaos, guiding help where it is needed most, and serving as the vital lifeline behind the scenes.

• 🔏 Corrections Officers: For maintaining safety, order, and security within our facilities every single day with unwavering professionalism.

• 🚒 Fire & EMS/EMT Services: For rushing into danger, providing life-saving medical care, and standing as a beacon of hope in our darkest moments.

Thank you for your courage, your sacrifices, and your unyielding commitment to our community. We see you, we appreciate you, and we honor you today and every day. 🤝💙💛❤️

🐾 Paws, smiles, and plenty of tail wags! 🐶🦴

Sheriff D. Miles and Deputies W. Brinkley, T. Demiel, and W. Hunter had a wonderful time at the 18th Annual Mutt Strut! From meeting adorable four-legged friends to sharing treats, cuddles, and Sheriff’s Office goodies, it was a great day filled with furry fun and community connections. 🐕⭐️

A big thank-you to the Suffolk Humane Society for inviting us to be part of this beloved annual event at Bennett’s Creek Park! We always enjoy spending time with our Suffolk neighbors—both two-legged and four-legged—and celebrating the special bond we share with our pets.

Until next time, keep those tails wagging!
