We pause today to honor those we lost, those who survived, and all who were forever changed by September 11, 2001. Among the many symbols of resilience that have emerged since then, one stands quietly powerful: the Survivor Tree.

It originally stood by the World Trade Center Towers but was severely damaged when the buildings fell on this date in 2001. While first responders and volunteers searched desperately for survivors and then for remains, New York City Parks and Recreation took this Callery Pear tree into their charge, in hopes of nursing it back to health. The charred plant looked like it would not recover, but somehow showed signs of life. A branch pushed through, giving hope where there seemed none. The staff tenderly cared for the plant and watched it emerge from the devastation it endured.

The tree was replanted at the WTC Memorial Site and stands today, scarred but strong, with messages of love, heartbreak, and encouragement circling its trunk.

NYC. The Pentagon. Flight 93.
25 years later, we remember.
