So the "Judge" was just "doing her job"?????!!! God help us.
Should children facing deportation be guaranteed legal representation? 🤔🥲 A Texas immigration courtroom became the setting for a series of scenes involving 25 migrant children, some as young as 3, whose cases could determine whether they would remain in the United States.
During Monday’s proceedings in Harlingen, a 3-year-old entertained himself with a microphone, a 6-year-old pretended to fly an airplane, and a teenage girl looked around the courtroom, hoping to make eye contact with a friend.
Several children appeared without legal representation, including an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old and a 13-year-old boy named Angel.
According to CNN, Angel told the judge he feared returning to Honduras, explaining that most of his family lived in the United States. Despite his concerns, the judge ordered his removal, although he was given the opportunity to appeal the decision.
Unlike defendants in criminal cases, children facing immigration proceedings are not automatically entitled to government-funded attorneys. Some must navigate the process without legal representation unless nonprofit organizations or volunteer lawyers step in.
For the adults in the courtroom, these were legal proceedings. For the youngest children, the microphones, imaginary airplanes and familiar faces seemed to hold their attention as decisions about their futures unfolded around them.
