Congratulations to the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Deed Fraud Task Force on being named Task Force of the Year!

Recognized by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI) Florida Chapter, this multi-agency task force is making a significant impact in the fight against deed fraud.

Since 2022, the task force has investigated nearly 800 cases, made 66 arrests, achieved a 100% conviction rate in adjudicated cases and recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars for victims.

But their work goes beyond the numbers. From protecting vulnerable residents to recovering stolen homes, these investigators are helping safeguard one of people’s most valuable assets.

We are proud to recognize BSO Detectives Joseph Sommovigo, Christopher Bradley, Scott Schaefer and James “Rob” Feick for their dedication and contributions to this important mission.

Congratulations to the entire task force and our law enforcement partners on this well-deserved honor!

Pursuing a dream starts with taking the first step.

BSO’s Explorers toured Broward College’s Institute of Public Safety, getting an inside look at the Law Enforcement Academy, the training, dedication and discipline it takes to become a deputy.

Experiences like these help the next generation of public safety professionals turn their dreams into goals, and their goals into action.

Courage in action and a commitment to protecting lives.

On August 7, BSO Harbor Patrol Deputy Roger Manes, Jr., assigned to the Port Everglades District, rescued an adult male and a child after their jet ski broke down in the inlet as a cruise ship was departing.

Deputy Manes’ response is a powerful reminder of the critical role our personnel play in protecting lives on Broward’s waterways.

Thank you, Deputy Manes, for your courage and commitment to service.

One screenshot, one repost, one click can have serious consequences.

Cyberbullying isn’t just about hurtful comments, it can also involve sharing private or explicit images of minors, which is a crime and carries serious legal consequences.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office reminds teens: Don’t share it. If someone sends you an explicit image of a minor, stop the spread and seek help from a trusted adult.

What you send matters. What you share matters. Make the right choice.

Nearly 20 years after Leon Heron was murdered in Lauderdale Lakes, the BSO Cold Case Homicide Unit has helped bring answers to a case that has weighed heavily on his family for decades.

Through persistence, investigative work and critical evidence, detectives identified two suspects who are now charged in connection with Heron’s 2007 killing.

Following an airboat crash in a remote area of the western Everglades, Broward Sheriff’s Office law enforcement and fire rescue personnel worked together to locate and rescue an injured man.

The response began with BSO dispatchers at Broward County Regional Communications answering the 911 call and immediately sending help. Deputies from BSO’s Weston District, Marine Patrol Unit and Aviation Unit responded, while Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue deployed Air Rescue 85 (AR85) and a fire rescue airboat.

Despite the remote location and challenging terrain, BSO Aviation located the crash site and guided fire rescue crews to the scene. Relying on their specialized training, Air Rescue and airboat crews navigated the swampy conditions to reach the injured man, provide lifesaving care and hoist him into AR85 for transport to a trauma hospital.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the injured man is expected to make a full recovery. Tragically, another man and a dog lost their lives in the crash.

This rescue highlights the training, readiness and seamless coordination between BSO’s law enforcement and fire rescue personnel, working together when lives are on the line.
