Thanks, Linton Mohammed.

Norwegian neuroscientist Audrey van der Meer hooked students up to high-density EEG caps. Then she asked them to do two things. Write with a pen. Type on a keyboard. The results were immediate and severe. Writing by hand caused a synchronized burst of neural activity across the entire brain. Memory, sensory integration, and learning centers all fired at once. The brain was lit up and engaged. Typing did practically nothing. Because typing is just hitting identical keys over and over, it requires zero spatial problem-solving. When students typed the exact same words, the sophisticated cognitive network collapsed. Typing effectively allows the brain to coast on a low-energy autopilot. This explains why we remember things we write down and forget things we type. Taking notes on a laptop turns you into a human transcription machine. Using a pen forces you to listen, synthesize, and summarize in real time. Digital keystrokes offer frictionless efficiency. But the fastest way to record information is actually the worst way to retain it.

: Folio

When two leaves (four pages when printed on both sides) were printed on a sheet so that it could be folded once, collated with other folded sheets and bound, the format of the volume was a "folio."
