Pasco County was created in 1887 from the southern part of Hernando County. It was named for Samuel Pasco, who served in the Confederate Army, the state legislature and in the United States Senate from 1887 to 1899. The earliest towns were Anclote, Blanton, Dade City, Earnestville, Fort Dade, Macon (Trilby), Lacoochee and San Antonio. Citrus was an important industry when the county was formed, although a decline followed a freeze in 1895. Several large sawmills operated in the county in the early part of the twentieth century. During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, New Port Richey became the winter home of silent screen star Thomas Meighan and golfer Gene Sarazen; Meighan attempted to bring other Hollywood figures to the city. The county has experienced significant population growth since the 1960s. The growth began along the Gulf coast but is now occurring most rapidly in areas north of Tampa. Located on the Gulf of Mexico in the Tampa Bay area, Pasco is part of a nine-county region referred to as the "Nature Coast." Pasco County has a total of 742 square miles with more than 100 square miles of managed recreational facilities, including parks, four artificial reefs (one made up of surplus military tanks), more than 25 golf courses, and three State-designated canoe trails. The possibilities to enjoy the outdoors and nature are unlimited.

🏘️✨ October is National Community Planning Month! ✨🏘️
This month, we celebrate the planners, community members and local leaders who help shape Pasco County’s future. Thoughtful planning plays a vital role in building sustainable, vibrant, and community‑centered places — and it all starts with meaningful public involvement.

From updates to the Tree Mitigation Fund and Land Development Code to long‑range initiatives like Pasco 2050, our community’s input continues to guide the way we grow. Together, we’re transforming spaces, addressing emerging land use challenges and creating a strong foundation for the generations to come.

The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners proudly proclaims October 2026 as National Community Planning Month. Join us in recognizing the dedication of our Planning Commission, professional planners, regional partners and passionate citizen planners who help make Pasco County a better place to live, work, and play. 💙🌳📘

👁️✨ Honoring World Sight Day in Pasco County ✨👁️
Today, we recognize World Sight Day and raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving our vision. Clear sight helps us learn, work, stay safe and connect with the world — yet many children, adults and seniors in our community face daily challenges due to vision loss.

Thanks to the vital work of Preserve Vision Florida and the generosity of the Holloway Foundation, thousands of Pasco County residents will receive screenings, eye exams, glasses and vision health education in the coming year. Their efforts help ensure that everyone in our community can see their own bright futures.

We encourage all residents, businesses and organizations to make eye health a lifelong priority. 💙👓

TRAFFIC ALERT: A repaving project kicks off on Monday, October 19, along Little Road between DeCubellis Road and Ridge Road.

Crews are refreshing the roadway and adding new pavement markings through late November. You can expect single‑lane closures, with message boards guiding traffic. Plan a little extra time into your commute, as some work will happen during the day, and some will take place overnight.

Thank you for your cooperation and stay safe!

Have old tires you need to get rid of? Now’s your chance… for free! Pasco County Solid Waste is hosting two free tire disposal drop off events this Saturday to help prevent dengue fever. Get rid of some old tires and protect Pasco County from mosquito-borne illness.

Free Tire Drop Off – Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026
• Moon Lake Park, 8985 Lake Dr, New Port Richey | 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
• Samuel Pasco Athletic Park, 39835 Chancey Rd, Zephyrhills | 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

Residents can bring up to four, old tires – no more than 36 inches in diameter.
Tires can collect water and quickly become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Tires must be separated from other trash or waste, but rims can stay attached.
Solid Waste continues to accept tires for free until November 1, 2026, at three locations: mypas.co/TrashInfo
