Did you know — Confederate government banknote issues were plagued by poor production and easily counterfeited designs that haunted the South’s economy for nearly the entire length of the Civil War. Wishing to upgrade the security of the CSA’s currency, secretary of the treasury C.G. Memminger secretly ordered upgraded security plates from England for the backs of Confederate notes. S. Straker & Sons of London made the plates using a process called electrotyping, a drawn-out electrochemical reaction that uses an electric current to stimulate conducting ions suspended in an electrolyte solution. The plates were captured en route by the Union blockade, and never reached their intended destination at the Confederate Treasury.
The term “Chemicograph”, which describes the plates, was most likely coined by S. Straker & Sons in reference to their specific electrochemical process.
Reprints have been made from the original captured plates, and are valued by collectors today as one of the “what ifs” in Civil War financial history.

While 1864 Confederate States of America notes are the most common banknote issue from the Southern Confederacy, they are notoriously difficult to locate in true Gem grade. This $100 is as nice as any we have seen, with full margins on all four sides, and incredibly deep embossing that highlights its full originality. It is tied with just a few others that we have seen for the finest example that we’ve graded in the last two-plus decades.

Legacy Currency Grading stands behind every grading opinion we’ve ever offered. Legacy’s Grading Guarantee is the most extensive warranty offered by any paper money grading service. We guarantee every single note that we’ve graded since 2005, including those certified under our prior brand name (PCGS Currency) and under the Legacy Currency Grading label.

We have always believed that having a strong grading guarantee helps protect the hobby that we love. We fully stand behind every grading opinion that we’ve ever offered, and whenever we’ve been wrong—and since we are human, occasionally we are wrong—we have always tried our best to resolve the situation and work with buyers and/or sellers to reimburse where financial loss has occurred.

Details about the Legacy Currency Grading Guarantee may be found on our website here: https://legacygrading.com/grading-guarantee/.

This incredible new discovery is the first example of this issue to appear in private hands. All other known examples of this rarity are firmly ensconced in institutional or museum collections. It is soon to appear in for sale at an upcoming auction by The Canadian Numismatic Company!
