Our members kept their promise. Now we're taking the Education Department to court to make sure it keeps its own.
Today, AFT President Randi Weingarten joined members in Boston to announce a major class action lawsuit against Education Secretary Linda McMahon over the mishandling of Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
We’re seeing more clawbacks than buybacks. Nearly 90,000 buyback applications are backlogged. Members like Elizabeth Schoepflin, a speech-language pathologist, have seen earned loan forgiveness credits disappear. Others have waited more than a year for answers while continuing to make payments.
These aren't just numbers. They're working people struggling to get ahead.
Student debt relief isn't a handout. It's a promise earned through public service. And we're fighting to deliver it. https://www.aft.org/press-release/weingarten-v-mcmahon-major-class-action-lawsuit-launched-against-education-secretary
