This week's project was making some tall pine trees. I used some 9" long balsa wood dowels and shaped them into tree trunks. Then I painted the trunks and glued plastic branches onto the tree trunks. I made the branches on my 3D printer. I then sprayed the branches with hair spray and applied a dark green static grass. Each tree took about 3 hours to make from start to finish.

This weekend I bought this flat car at the Madcity Train show. When I got home I looked up some prototype photographs and decided to try weathering it. I used several shades of brown acrylic on the deck, followed by some brown Pan Pastel, and set it with some mineral spirits. I than added a black oil wash on top of that. Sides were done just using brown Pan Paste set with mineral spirits. I think it turned out good.

Doing some weathering on my CN Thrall well cars this week. The unweathered car in the background is shown for comparison. Weathering done mostly with pan pastels put on dry, then wetted down with thinner and worked with a fan brush to make steaks. A final covering of dull coat was sprayed on to seal everything.

While I was in Nekoosa Wisconsin this summer, I spotted this cool building across the street from the ice cream shop I was at. Turned out it was the old fire & police station for Nekoosa from many years ago. It looked like a nice modeling project, so I took some pictures of it. Back home I drew up and designed the kit using CAD software. The brick walls I made on my laser cutter using 1/8" thick MDF craft board. The bricks were then colored with craft paint and colored pencils. Windows and doors were made on my 3D printer. Roof is thick card stock with masking tape, painted to look like tar paper. It was a fun project, and I think it turned out pretty good.

This week's project was weathering a black Athearn 50 ft C&NW gondola with a pulpwood load. Weathering dark colored cars like this one seem a bit more challenging. Weathering was done on this gondola using acrylic paint, pan pastels fixed with plain mineral spirits, and then some rust and black oil wash to various areas. Pulpwood load is a resin casting I made from real sticks I cut up and glued together. Pulpwood load painted with acrylic paint and black oil wash.

Made another Soo Line gondola with pulpwood load. Tried to weather this one a bit lighter than the last one.
