Recently, there has been a report of coyotes biting people and dogs in Bergen County, NJ. To be clear, we have not received any reports of such incidents in our immediate area. However, we thought it would be prudent to post information about these incidents and information about coyotes/rabies in general in the public's best interest. See this report for information about the incidents in question and other posts on this page about coyotes and rabies.

A rogue coyote has attacked two people in Bergen County, prompting officials to take serious action and issue safety warnings as the coyote population continues to grow in New Jersey.

If you discover a bat inside your home, if it is possible to do so, place something over the bat like a bowl or a bucket, if it is flying around in a room that can be closed off from the rest of the house, do so. Then call the police non-emergency number at 973-691-0850, day or night, to request an animal control officer to respond. We will come and attempt to capture the bat then will send it to the state lab for testing. If you have any questions regarding bats or rabies, please contact Mount Olive Township Animal Control at 973-691-0900 ext. 7334 or via email at [email protected].

On August 23rd, 2025, P/T Mount Olive Animal Control Officer Cindy Zeller was called to the area of Indian Spring Rd. in Budd Lake for an injured hawk. While this is a situation animal control is familiar with, what she found on scene was anything but routine. When she arrived, she was confronted with a very angry large Red Tailed Hawk that had become impaled on a reflective fire hydrant marker through its wing.

In spite of the unusual circumstances, Ofc. Zeller was able to quickly assess the situation and request appropriate resources to assist her. With the help of the Budd Lake Volunteer Fire Co. #1, they were able to free the bird and Ofc. Zeller transported it to The Raptor Trust, a bird sanctuary in Millington, NJ, where it received treatment and spent the next month and a half recuperating under their expert care.

On October 7th, 2025, Ofc. Zeller was given the opportunity to release the hawk back to the wild after a full recovery. This brings Ofc. Zeller's effort to help this beautiful bird full circle. It is not often that we in animal control get to see the results of such efforts but we certainly appreciate the chance to see it come to fruition. Please join us in congratulating Ofc. Cindy Zeller on a job well done.
