When emergencies happen, we know that Utah’s finest are going to answer the call.

On National First Responders Day, the Utah Senate thanks our firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, dispatchers and search and rescue teams for their skill, care and dedication.

From wildfires and flooding to everyday emergencies, their presence makes a noticeable difference for our families and communities.

Breaking the cycle of homelessness requires more than temporary solutions. It takes accountability, compassion and a commitment to lasting change.

Utah celebrated the reopening of the Orange Street Community Correctional Center and the launch of the ARCH Project, an innovative approach to addressing homelessness and repeat criminal offenses.

Through legislation and funding, we have supported this initiative, which combines accountability with treatment, mental health services, employment assistance and long-term support to help Utahns rebuild their lives.
Our goal is to strengthen public safety, reduce repeat offenses and give individuals the tools and opportunities they need to achieve lasting stability and self-reliance.

By working together, we are building a stronger and safer future for all Utahns.

Pamela Atkinson was truly one of a kind. She had an extraordinary heart, an unwavering commitment to serving others and a great ability to make everyone she met feel valued. Her compassion was matched only by her determination to make a difference.

Pamela didn't just talk about service; she lived it every single day. She brought people together, inspired action and showed us the difference one person can make.

Utah is a better place because of Pamela Atkinson. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the selfless example she set for all of us.

My heart goes out to her family, friends and all who loved her. We have lost a remarkable woman and friend. She will be deeply missed, but the love she shared and the difference she made will not be forgotten.

The Utah Senate is working with transportation and aviation leaders to help shape the future of advanced air mobility in our state.

Senators saw electric aviation technology in action as Utah explores its potential through a new FAA pilot program. What we learn will help guide decisions about the infrastructure, workforce and policies needed to safely integrate new technologies into the transportation system.

From better connecting rural communities to strengthening emergency response and creating new opportunities for Utahns, advanced air mobility could transform how people and goods move across our state.

With the 2034 Olympic Games on the horizon, we’re looking ahead at how emerging technologies could support Utah’s growing transportation needs.

Our vision extends far beyond the Games. The investments we make, the workforce we prepare and the partnerships we build today can benefit Utah families for generations to come.

Utah is preparing to power America’s future.

Utah State University, Brigham City and Hi Tech Solutions are exploring plans for a proposed Center for Energy Research & Technology Campus (CERT) at USU Brigham City. The campus would bring higher education and industry together to expand hands-on training, technical education and research in nuclear energy and advanced technologies.

As energy demand grows, we need more than new technology. We need the engineers, technicians, researchers and skilled tradespeople who can put that technology to work. By building that workforce here in Utah, we can create pathways to high-paying careers, strengthen our economy and national security, and help lead America’s advanced energy development.

Utah is leading, and partnerships like this are helping prepare our state and nation for tomorrow's opportunities.

Two years after Utah launched its AI regulatory sandbox, we’re using what we’ve learned to ask tough questions about how these tools should operate in health care.

Today, Rep. David Shallenberger joined Sen. Kirk Cullimore, state agencies, health care providers, and new sandbox participants. The sandbox allows Utah to test, measure, and learn before deciding what, if anything, should become law.

The Legislature is examining where existing law works, where changes may be needed, and how responsibility and liability should be balanced among developers, providers, and patients.

The standard is straightforward: Patient health comes first. If an AI tool doesn’t maintain or improve patient outcomes, it hasn’t met the mark.

New technology should earn trust through results. Utah is evaluating these tools carefully and building policy around what the evidence shows.

AI is helping Utah innovators transform health care, and Utah legislators are making sure it does so responsibly. As we add the new Healthcare pillar to our Pro-Human AI Initiative, Utah is safeguarding our health and our privacy while pursuing solutions to transform patients’ lives.

Governor Cox’s new executive order builds on that same pro-human approach by putting responsible innovation in the hands of Utahn’s, while also preserving individual freedom and privacy. We’re proud to work with the Office of Artificial Intelligence to ensure that technology works for the people, not people for technology.

Children who read become adults who succeed. That’s why the Utah Senate continues to prioritize early literacy, including passing S.B. 241 this year to identify reading challenges sooner. We know that when children and their parents have the right tools to develop a love of reading, it lays the foundation for success in school and beyond. We’re excited to see students, families and Utahns across the state participate in the first Utah Reads Read-a-Thon, picking up books in schools, libraries, workplaces and even the Capitol Rotunda.
