Glendale Fire Department We are the Glendale Fire Department 🔥 We protect and serve Glendale, AZ with courage and compassion. Our History

Our fire department began in 1912.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that the city hired its first fulltime paid fire chief. During the next decade in the 1960s, Glendale was able to show the need to employ its first fulltime paid firefighters.

1950s… First fulltime paid fire chief
1960s… First fulltime paid firefighters
1970s… Firefighters become paramedics
1980s… Firefighters become experts in Hazardous Materials
1990s… Firefighters train and learn about Weapons of Mass Destruction
New millennium… the Glendale Fire Department is enthusiastically involved in the growth of the city with major residential and business developments and sporting venues. Today

The Glendale Firefighters of years ago may have never envisioned our city having the needs it does today and the department having 240 firefighters, nine fire stations and responding to approximately 40,000 calls a year--in addition to being a fully accredited department. But even with all the changes, our core mission remains the same:

“The Glendale Fire Department: Fast, Caring, Innovative and Professional.”

Inside the Glendale Fire Department | Citizens Academy 2026

There’s a lot more to the fire service than what you see when the emergency lights come on!

Last Wednesday, participants in the Glendale Fire Department Citizens Academy spent the evening at Fire Station 158 getting an inside look at our Emergency Services operations.

The evening included discussions with Assistant Chief Timothy Pirtle, an overview of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a closer look at the responsibilities of our West Deputy and Battalion 151, and a tour of the fire station.

So, what's next?

Tonight, our Citizens Academy heads to the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center to explore the Support Services side of the department. From training and resources to capital improvement projects and the Emergency Operations Center, participants will discover the work that takes place behind the scenes to keep our firefighters prepared and our community protected.

Take a look at some photos from last week's session, and follow along as we continue giving our community a look inside the Glendale Fire Department!

25 Years of Service. A Legacy of Commitment.

A quarter of a century in the fire service is more than just a milestone. It's 25 years of answering the call, serving others, and being part of something bigger than yourself.

Through the challenges, sacrifices, and countless experiences, it's the lives they've impacted and the relationships built along the way that make this career so meaningful.

Six members of the Glendale Fire Department celebrated 25 years of dedicated service:

A. Merlino
S. Fernandez

20 Years of Service. 20 Years of Commitment.

Twenty years goes by faster than you think, especially in the fire service.

Over two decades, you see humanity at its best and at its worst. You experience moments that challenge you, calls that stay with you, and opportunities to make a difference in someone's life when they need it most.

But through it all, it's the good that keeps us going. The lives impacted, the people we've helped, and the relationships built with the brothers and sisters who stand beside us. Those are the things that make this career more than just a job.

Today, we recognize five members of the Glendale Fire Department who have reached an incredible milestone of 20 years of service.

Josh Boothby
Jose Morales
Jeremy Jacks
Amber Campbell
Courtney Dunlap

Each of you has dedicated two decades to serving others, building relationships, and contributing to the legacy of the Glendale Fire Department.

Thank you for 20 years and counting of dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to the Glendale Fire Department and the citizens of Glendale.

Here's to the years behind you, and the years still ahead.

A New Piece of Glendale Fire Department History at Station 153!

Today, we celebrated the official ribbon cutting and unveiling of the new artwork at Glendale Fire Station 153!

Vice Mayor Ray Malnar joined us for the occasion, sharing remarks about the significance of this project and its connection to our community. Fire Chief Ryan Freeburg was also presented with a commemorative plaque recognizing this special addition to our station.

A special thank you to the talented artist whose incredible work captured the spirit, pride, and dedication of the Glendale Fire Department. The artwork represents more than just the fire service. It reflects the people behind the badge, our commitment to serving others, and the strong connection we share with the community we proudly protect.

We are grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and for creating a lasting tribute that our firefighters and community can appreciate for years to come.

Fire Prevention Day | Glendale Fire Department

This past Saturday, the Glendale Fire Department had the opportunity to connect with our community for Fire Prevention Day!

Our Community Risk Reduction Team and firefighters spent the day promoting fire safety, sharing important prevention tips, and helping families better understand how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

From smoke alarm awareness and home escape planning to teaching our youngest residents about fire safety, events like these help build a safer, more prepared community.

Fire prevention is about more than education. It's about building relationships, creating awareness, and preventing emergencies before they happen.

Thank you to everyone who came out and spent part of their Saturday with us!

Serving Glendale means more than responding to emergencies. It means working together to prevent them.

Regional Technical Rescue Training | Preparing for the Unexpected

Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the Valley are known as Special Operations Training Days, bringing the Glendale Fire Department and our regional fire department partners together for collaborative training to ensure our teams operate seamlessly when responding to complex emergencies.

This week's focus was industrial rescue scenarios where traditional access methods, such as elevators and stairways, may not be available.

Working in loud, unfamiliar, and uneven environments, Glendale Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team (TRT), alongside our regional partners, practiced adapting to their surroundings, identifying hazards, and utilizing specialized rope rescue systems to safely access, secure, and move patients through challenging environments.

These training days go beyond technical skills. They strengthen communication, coordination, and consistency across regional agencies, ensuring that no matter which department responds, we train together, operate together, and are prepared to respond together.

Different agencies. One team. One mission.

Who We Are. What We Do. Why We Serve.

There’s a lot more to the Glendale Fire Department than what you see when an engine arrives at an emergency.

This week, Fire Chief Ryan Freeburg and his Executive staff welcomed participants to our 2026 Glendale Fire Citizens Academy, providing an inside look at who we are, how our department operates, and the many services we provide to our community.

From fire suppression and emergency medical services to specialized rescue operations, training, community risk reduction, and the personnel working behind the scenes, every part of our organization plays a critical role in keeping Glendale safe.

The Citizens Academy is an opportunity to pull back the curtain, connect with our residents, and show them the people, preparation, and dedication that go into serving our community every day.

We’re proud of what we do, and even more proud to share it with the community we serve.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first session. We're looking forward to the weeks ahead!
