In a few days, a man I’ve known since he was 15 years old will be married to a Godly and beautiful woman
As my brother and I were praying over him tonight, I told him “you are joining in covenant with God, agreeing to be the priest of your home”
I talk a lot about this so he gets it but I think it might be beneficial to break this down for anyone interested
What does “priest of the home” mean?
It does not mean:
❌A husband replaces the Church or clergy
❌A husband acts as mediator of salvation (Christ alone does that)
❌A husband dominates or rules harshly
It does mean:
💯A man bears primary spiritual responsibility for his household
💯He is called to represent God to his family and his family before God
💯He leads through sacrificial service, prayer, teaching, and holiness
Adam was the first priest
Before the Fall, Adam is placed in the garden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15).
Those Hebrew verbs (abad and shamar) are later used for Levitical priestly service in the tabernacle.
Adam’s failure was not merely moral—it was priestly:
✔️He failed to guard the sanctuary
✔️He failed to teach truth
✔️He failed to intercede when sin entered
This priestly failure echoes through Scripture.
Before the Levitical priesthood:
Fathers offered sacrifices (Noah, Abraham, Job)
Households were covenant units
The father was responsible for teaching the law (Deuteronomy 6)
“You shall teach them diligently to your children…”
This is not delegated to the state, synagogue, or later the church alone—it begins in the home.
It begins with the priest
Christ is the true High Priest, and men are called to image Him—not replace Him.
Ephesians 5 gives the clearest pattern:
• Christ → Church
• Husband → Wife
• Father → Household
The model is cruciform, not authoritarian.
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”
That is priestly language: sacrifice, sanctification, presentation.
The priestly duties of a husband in the home
Intercessor
A man should be the chief prayer warrior of his home.
Praying for his wife and children
Praying with them
Covering the household spiritually
Job is the clearest example:
“Job would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings… ‘It may be that my children have sinned.’”
A man should also be a Teacher of the Word
A man does not need to be a scholar—but he must be faithful to Scripture reading and Modeling obedience
Silence here is abdication.
A silent priest is a bad priest.
A passive priest models Adam not Christ
A husband is a Guardian of holiness
This includes:
What enters the home (media, influences)
Moral direction
Repentance and forgiveness when sin occurs
Priests guarded sacred space.
The home is sacred space.
A husband priest is a Servant-leader
Biblical headship is burden-bearing, not privilege-seeking.
He Initiates reconciliation
He Owns his failure
He lays down comfort for the good of the family
Christ washes feet before He wears a crown. A Godly Priest in His home does likewise
A husband priest NEVER dinishes a wifes value
He does not diminish the spiritual intelligence or agency of women
He does not silence his wife
He does not deny shared prayer or mutual counsel
Rather, it establishes order, not hierarchy of worth.
Both husband and wife are equal in being image bearers of God and accountable to God
Just as Christ submits to the Father without inferiority, so biblical roles function without inequality.
To be a priest of the home is not glamorous.
It is unseen.
It is costly.
It is daily.
And Scripture is clear:
“Much will be required of the one entrusted with much.”
Men are not called to be perfect priests—but faithful ones, under the mercy of Christ, the true High Priest.
