🎃Get in the Halloween spirit with ghost stories from our museums!

A child ghost who haunts the historic Auburn courthouse. A former owner of the Bernhard Museum who just can’t leave it behind. Hear these stories from actual Placer County Museum docents and staff in our spooky audio miniseries, "The Placer Dead."

Placer County is approaching 7 dozen lead poisoning cases so far in 2026. During Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, a reminder that no amount of lead is safe for your child. Ask their provider for a blood lead test.

Test at one and test at two! A healthy start begins with you!

It’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week!

Small amounts of lead can harm a child’s long-term development, even if they do not look or act sick now. The good news: early testing can prevent lifelong harm.

Almost all California kids are at risk of lead exposure and should be tested at ages 1 and 2. Ask your child’s health care provider for a blood lead test.

Common sources of lead include:

-Toys and jewelry

-Spices and traditional remedies

-Old paint and dust in older homes and recently renovated homes

-Imported cookware or pottery

-Soil near homes built before 1978

-Hobbies and jobs involving lead

Thank you to everyone in the community who helped us track West Nile virus this year by reporting dead birds! Because WNV circulates between mosquitoes and birds, testing dead birds helps us identify where the virus is active and guide our mosquito control efforts.

👉 This year, we’ve received 97 dead bird submissions, with 9 positive WNV test results.

There are only a few more days left to report dead birds to the hotline this season. Even as the weather cools and the season winds down, every report matters!

Fire restrictions on the Tahoe National Forest have been lifted, effective Oct. 27. Recent weather conditions have reduced fire danger across the Tahoe National Forest, prompting forest officials to rescind fire restrictions. This decision is based on fuel moisture conditions and predicted weather.

The lifting of these restrictions only applies to national forest lands managed by Tahoe National Forest. Campfire permits are free and are available at permit.preventwildfiresca.org.
