10 years ago. Screen printing materials for server books in my San Francisco yard. *I waited tables for 14 years and I always made my own book-bound server books with fun materials (server books are the things that waiters carry around that holds their notepad, money, etc.). My colleagues liked them and wanted their own, then other waiters in other restaurants, then a restaurant owner wanted some as check presenters. When that happened, I thought, ‘I should step this up and really make sure I’m doing this well’. So I approached a local bookbinder to see if I could learn some tricks. He was incredibly gracious and welcomed me into his workshop in South San Francisco where he taught me a ton and let me use his beautiful (sometimes hundreds of years old) machines.
Then a funny thing happened. Another local restaurant saw my work and asked if I could make them some too, but they weren’t aware that I only had experience doing bookbound items and asked me for a few hundred wooden check presenters. Instead of saying I don’t do that, I said sure and figured it out really fast with my partner, Zephyr. Haha! Im sure if I saw those now, I’d think they were terrible. That was 9 years ago and since that order, I’ve been doing this work exclusively.
