In Oaxaca they have the expression "It already smells like the dead" which is a way of referring to the smell of Cempasúchil during the Day of the Dead season or they also use the "Already feel the air of the dead" in reference to the fact that by this time it is already begin to feel the first cold of autumn.

🕊 Tekahné:kake Stacey says her nephew cried after racist mocking on the Montreal Metro. Tekahné:kake Stacey says her family faced racist mocking as they boarded the train.

The Kanien'kehá:ka woman from Kahnawà:ke had attended a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event at the Montreal Children's Hospital with her mother, nephew and his friend, and says they heard mocking war cries as soon as they entered the Metro. 🕊

Her nine-year-old nephew was still wearing the traditional clothing he had worn to perform the smoke dance, a traditional Haudenosaunee dance honouring children who attended residential school; Stacey says a nearby woman insulted and mocked him until he became upset and started crying.

Stacey posted her recording on Facebook Wednesday afternoon and deleted it Thursday after hateful comments, later thanking people for their support and saying the family would keep taking pride in who they are, while her nephew would need time to heal. 🕊

💔 Robert Gary Miller-Lahiaaks was born in 1950 on the Six Nations Mohawk Reserve in Brantford Ontario. At the age of two he was taken from his Longhouse family and his community. Miller served eleven years (1953-1964) in the Mohawk Institute, or as it was known to student-inmates- the Mush Hole. During Miller's time at the Mush Hole he experienced violent daily life that included s*xual assault at the hands of staff. Miller uses his art to tell the story of what happened to him and others within the residential school.

"Serving Time at The Mush Hole: Visual Testimony of R. G. Miller-Lahiaaks (Mohawk, Six Nations) — Selected works from Mush Hole Remembered (2008)." opened at the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre on September 12, 2013. In the words of artist R.G. Miller, this exhibit represents “a combination of vague, mundane memories of years at the school, and flashes of horror experienced there. They are the strongest memories I could approach without descending into a place I would not be able to emerge from.”
