On Saturday, November 7, from 8:45 AM to noon, Treetops School International is teaming up with GROW North Texas and The Giving Grove to plant native and fruit trees right here at our Euless campus. Volunteers will learn about tree biology, swales and berms, rain gardens, and how to plant a tree the right way.

This workday is part of "Roots of Renewal: Building Natural and Community Resilience," a project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Five Star grant program.

Every tree we put in the ground helps protect our land and gives our students a living classroom for years to come.

Registration through the link is for adults only (but, as always, kids are welcome).

Today, a couple of weeks after our last big storm, Coach Andres and Mr. Shane took students out to our creek banks to measure how much land the water took with it.

Students helped measure the washed-out section and found it was 30 feet long, 14 feet wide, and up to 8 feet deep.

From there, Mr. Shane walked them through the math to find the volume, and together they figured out that up to 3,360 cubic feet of soil was lost in a single storm.

That is as much as 124 cubic yards, or roughly 10 to 12 dump truck loads, gone from one spot on our campus.

This is what learning looks like at Treetops.

Our students got to take real measurements, apply math to a real problem, and see firsthand how water shapes the land around them. The banks they measured today are the same place they learn every day, and each heavy rain puts more of that space at risk.

We are grateful to the Texas A&M Forest Service for awarding us a $40,084.85 grant to repair prior erosion along our banks. That support is helping us restore damage that was already done, and erosion is something we face every time a big storm rolls through.

Our goal is to protect this habitat for the long term using blue/green infrastructure.

That means working with nature through native plantings, restored vegetation along the banks, and natural drainage features that slow the water down and hold the soil in place.

This is where we need your help.
