This past weekend we hosted an E-Bike Safety Workshop in Scripps Ranch. It's important for all of to stay safe and know how to keep our friends and family safe when riding e-bikes in our communities. During the event we presented partner organizations with Certificates of Recognition celebrating their contributions to public safety in our communities.

We want to thank our co-hosts and partner organizations for their informative presentations: UC San Diego Health, Circulate San Diego, and the San Diego Sheriff's Office (SDSO).

Important update from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office on missing SVP Wakefield

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office has called off the search for Sexually Violent Predator Merle Wakefield after he was found deceased in the City of San Diego.

On Monday, October 19, just after 9:30 a.m., the San Diego Police Department responded to a call of a human body that was discovered in a riverbed near the 4800 block of Fairmount Avenue.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and later positively identified the body to be Wakefield. The Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Wakefield’s death. His next of kin has been notified.

Because this is still an active investigation, no further information will be released at this time.

On September 25, Wakefield removed his GPS device while at work in Rancho Bernardo and absconded from the scene.

Personnel with Liberty Healthcare, which was in charge of supervising Wakefield as part of the State's Conditional Release Program, notified the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and San Diego Police Department when Wakefield could not be located. All law enforcement agencies in the region were also alerted, as well as the public and media.

Since Wakefield’s disappearance, the San Diego Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force worked diligently investigating this case and followed all tips and leads.

wants to thank its law enforcement partners, as well as the community and media, for their assistance with this case.

A reminder: If You See Something, Say Something.

Report any suspicious activity by calling your local law enforcement agency. In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You can also remain anonymous by calling San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

This past weekend I hosted my annual California Heroes Month Celebration, which recognizes the everyday heroes in our communities.

When I served you in the California State Senate, we passed Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 97, which annually designates each October as "California Heroes Month" throughout the State of California.

Hosting these events has always been one of my favorite parts of my job, as I get the opportunity to recognize those contributing their time, treasure, and talent to make our community even better!

We want to thank the El Cajon Branch Library for generously providing us their beautiful space for this event.

National weather forecasts predict potential heavy rain across San Diego County this weekend - meaning it could be a good time to pick up some free sandbags.

As they have in the past, the County of San Diego - Government and CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire are providing free bags and/or sand at numerous fire stations for those living in the unincorporated areas. To view sandbag pickup locations, visit: http://www.alertsandiego.org/en-us/recovery/sandbags/

Properly placed sandbags can help protect your home from flooding and destructive runoff. It is recommended that anyone interested should call ahead to double check availability and remember to bring a shovel to fill the bags. Note: Some stations may have a limited supply.

We all know of an everyday hero who has made a positive impact in our lives.

District 2 is home to many of these everyday heroes. It can be a neighbor who goes the extra mile to help somebody in need, a teacher who reignites our love for learning, or a coach that helps us achieve our goals.

I need your help in recognizing these everyday heroes. Scan the QR code to nominate yours or visit www.bit.ly/District2Heroes (case-sensitive).
