Utah’s firefighters put everything on the line to protect lives, homes, and communities across our state. I’m deeply grateful for their courage and for the families who support them through long and dangerous days.

This season, that gratitude carries particular weight as we mourn firefighter pilots Chris Andersen and Miles Elliott, who lost their lives while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire. We will not forget their great sacrifice in service to others.

To every firefighter who has answered the call this season, and to the families who send them out the door: thank you. We owe you more than we can say.

I’ve ordered U.S. and Utah flags at all state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning today in honor of firefighter pilots Chris Andersen and Miles Elliott, who lost their lives while battling the Widemouth 2 Fire.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of the last interment. I invite Utahns, businesses, and organizations across the state to join us in this recognition.

One of my favorite parts of last week’s One Utah Summit was seeing people come together to make Utah a better place for everyone.

As part of the Summit, volunteers assembled literacy kits for kindergarten and first grade students across southern Utah, helping them start the new school year strong.

Today we mourn two helicopter pilots who lost their lives while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire.

They put themselves in harm’s way to protect our state and gave their lives in that service.

Abby and I are heartbroken. Our prayers are with their families and the entire wildland fire community.

Utah will never forget their courage, their service, and their sacrifice.

Today personnel are responding to an incident regarding firefighting aviation near the Widemouth 2 Fire.

Wildland firefighting is among the most dangerous jobs in the world. Today is a painful reminder of the extraordinary risks these brave men and women accept to protect us.

We ask all Utahns to keep them in your prayers and to give investigators and emergency responders the time and space they need. We will share more information as it becomes available.

At the One Utah Summit in Cedar City, we talked about the decisions that will shape our state for generations.

Our focus is clear: help Utahns build good lives, strengthen the places that make Utah special, and ensure prosperity reaches every corner of the state.

If we get those things right, Utah can continue leading the nation and show what’s possible when we build together.

In the face of fire and flooding, Beaver and Millard counties have shown the best of Utah.

Neighbors have shown up for neighbors. Local leaders, first responders, volunteers, and countless others have worked side by side to help their communities recover. That spirit is carrying these communities through one of the toughest wildfire seasons we’ve ever faced.

The Widemouth 2 Fire is now 99,485 acres and 10% contained. Crews continue making progress where conditions allow while protecting homes and communities.

Thank you to everyone serving on the front lines. Please do your part by avoiding activities that could spark another wildfire.

This morning, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz and I signed an agreement committing $18 million to help Beaver and Millard counties recover from this year’s devastating wildfires and flooding.

This partnership includes $9 million from U.S. Forest Service and $9 million from the State of Utah to stabilize burned landscapes, reduce flood risk, repair roads and other critical infrastructure, restore wildlife habitat, and help our ranching and recreation communities recover.

I’m grateful to Chief Schultz for coming to Utah to see the damage firsthand and for the partnership of our federal team. And to the firefighters, first responders, county leaders, and crews still working around the clock—thank you. Utah is grateful for your courage and service.

Every time I meet with Utah students, I leave more hopeful about our state’s future.

Southern Utah University asked how leaders seek out perspectives they may not share, how we can prepare students for the future and how we can keep the American dream within reach. Those are the kinds of questions our future leaders should be asking.

Utah is stronger because of people who choose to stay rooted here, investing their time, talents, and resources in the places they call home.

At the One Utah Summit this morning, we celebrated the fruits of that labor and honored the businesses and individuals who are serving their neighbors, building lasting institutions, and making Utah a better place. Thank you for planting yourselves here and giving back.
