Douglas County leaders, public safety officials and first responders broke ground Thursday on a new hangar that will provide a permanent home for the County’s Helitack helicopter and firefighting personnel. The facility will protect critical aerial resources, support year-round readiness and create additional opportunities for public safety agencies to train together.

“Wildfire preparedness is one of the most significant investments we can make in protecting our community,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon. “Douglas County is unique in having its own Helitack team, and this hangar will ensure those resources are protected and ready to respond at any time, in any weather."

A piece of Douglas County history has been brought back to life.

The Spring Valley Schoolhouse served generations of residents as a place to learn, worship and gather before closing in 1946. In the 1970s, the schoolhouse was purchased and converted into a private residence.

Since being obtained by the County in 2012, restoration efforts have included strengthening the foundation, removing the second floor, installing replica siding and new flooring, repainting the interior and exterior, and returning the original slate chalkboards to the walls.

Preserving places like the Spring Valley Schoolhouse reflects the Board of Douglas County Commissioners’ core priority of protecting our historic and natural resources – ensuring the stories that shaped our community can be experienced for generations to come.
