“Ken, I’m having the greatest financial year of my life, but I am still so worried.”

Across the expanse of my conference table, this FAANG executive was admitting, that even in the financial security, he had a chip on his shoulder. Trump, in all of his xenophobia, made him worry how his colleagues would treat him if they realized he was not a citizen. Tailored clothing, no accent, good looking and in good spirits, he knew that his non-citizen status would undermine his professional career if others knew.

“I have a family to think of, my daughter is going to college. How can I support her if I’m caught up in some immigration confusion? I’m a law-abiding citizen, and still I’m under threat in Trump's America - I’m doing everything right.”

I look at the FBI records, he’s right, they’re clean. He’s doing community service, a family man, a man of religion, of community, of motivation. So we file, and provide him with security. I was hired for peace of mind, and I am thrilled to be able to provide it. The legal argument wasn’t the difficult part, this was a moment where I was more counselor, and less legal.. Legalor?.. Legal advisor. Reassuring him that transitions can be scary, however, the reward is worth the effort.

Commemorative Panel Speaker For Family Law Immigration AILA - Carolinas '26. There is an organization called AILA - American Immigration Lawyers Association. I’ve been a member for many years, as the library and collective camaraderie of hundreds of thousands of lawyers internationally continue to support each other through this organization. Recently, I found myself in quite a nervous position. I was invited to be a panelist and expert in front of the Carolina chapter of the national organization. Peers who have practice longer than I have been alive would listen to me speak as the expert in the room, I was afraid of looking foolish and a terrible lawyer. I’m proud to admit that I did it scared, with a support of friends and mentors. You can catch the blush of adrenaline flooding my face as I took photos with two of my other panelists.

How frivolous is it to get a name wrong, until it’s on your official proof of immigration status.

Client’s a Jr. - his dad and he share the same name, different middle name. He’s a bachelor, working as a start-up engineer, and his dad is a retired man, living in the countryside with his wife. Green card renewals, nothing difficult - or it should be pretty simple.

He brought in his green card, and it was wrong - he wasn’t a 64 year old man. The card in hand meant he couldn’t renew his driver’s license, worries about getting married in the future, keeping his job. One piece of incorrect plastic creating so much chaos. Someone, somewhere, a clerical error, and now his life is on hold. This card was half right for him, half right for his dad; right for no real person. I may have strained a muscle rolling my eyes about how little this error was, but the weight of its existence was serious.

It took seventeen and a half months, tracking down the one knot in the system, to right this wrong, over-write the error in name. Back on track, and onto regular-schedule programs, Mr. D is now a citizen and no more worries about having to worry about further immigration snafus.

I’ve wanted to share these little wins lately; “Mom, look, I’m on TV!” but I worry - Instagram is full of so many aesthetically beautiful things and I am, well, just Kenneth.

What if people don’t like me because of the way that I look that day, whether my suit looks good, whether or not I’m put together?

These moments where it’s a little too long between haircuts, and I’m called in to do a job. Time passes and another forehead wrinkle joins the fold - I gain some weight and you can see it in the chubby cheeks as I talk.

People can be cruel, bullies taught me that when I was growing up, and today, the media shares atrocities that echo the sentiment about the cruelty of man. A nightmare that people can be hostile, competitive, and unkind.

Dreamingly, life would be wonderful if fair, that regardless of what I look like or how put together I am, people would not judge.

Even in my worries, I hesitantly post to remind myself, in the moments that I showed up, I didn’t care how ridiculous I looked, how tired I was, over beat down life treated me, but instead, that I did show up. That’s still a win to me.

This case was dead in the water until the day a bartender was pouring her own shots on my oak desk.

There’s a knot in my stomach, thinking about how this all started - the case was introduced to me with a wife and immigrant husband, sitting across from me, as I read six pages of government accusations on why the marriage was believed to be fraudulent. They held each other’s hands as I just poured over the detailed accusations, air thick over quiet lofi.

The evidence was sparse, quotes from the interview were damning, and the wife - even today - had a hard time recalling important parts of the relationship, her husband meekly and patiently supported her. She was really trying, and he was trying to keep it together.

Still, in my gut, I knew that the love was authentic, that if I presented a detailed case, I could maybe flip the pending denial. The deadline was in five weeks to put together a packet that took months - I informed them of the task and they promised that they would be up for it. They signed my retainer and I gave them my word.

Fast-forward a month, we are at the one week deadline. Photos are few, evidence incoming were iffy, supporting both love and not, and we only found a singular witness. They had some separations, and their mutual address was at her parent’s house. We had security videos of emergencies in the shared home, but the wife didn’t display actions of love, she displayed actions of self-preservation. When they were temporarily separated, their texts were meaningful, but I could not find witnesses that supported that the wife was grieving or even talked about him.

I only had one witness, an estranged family member, who, up to this point, gave nebulous and undetailed claims - fervently claiming that it was love, but not enough details to show it so. We pushed, her girlfriend supported her, and we danced around some depth that our witness did not want to be unearthed.

With the deadline looming, I had the witness in my office, and I laid out the case - what we have, and what would happen if I sent this in - bad things would happen if this was what was sent in.

They say that good things come to people who wait. They say good things come to people who work hard and pay their dues. What happens when you do it right, and still, the results don't come?

She first came to me, hoping to do everything right. Although she was not dealt the best circumstances, she trusted in the process. That's often what is the changing point. Trust.

We tackled the project together, to get her green card. The packet came together without a hitch, and payment was made to the government - hard-earned money from someone whose diploma translated poorly to the United States.

After the tracking number was sent to the client, they started to wait. They waited months; the wait turned into a year, turning into years. We waited a polite amount of time first, then made to wait an impolite amount of time. Without documentation, her ability to live day to day was hindered - her right to work, right to drive were under threat without getting the documents we asked for.

So, together, she and I held the government accountable. We pushed, pushed so that she could live her life fully. Reminding the government that people are more than a number, instead, they have families, responsibilities, and dreams.

And through that trust, this is the photo of success, that little shade of green in her hands is why we continue the work that we so passionately do.
