The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners approved a letter to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore requesting state funding for permanent safety improvements at the intersection of U.S. Route 301 and MD 405 as part of the state's fiscal year 2028 budget.
The intersection has been a longstanding safety concern for county officials and residents. Traffic volumes along U.S. Route 301 have increased by approximately 30%, contributing to growing concerns about the safety of motorists traveling through the area.

According to data provided by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), 66 crashes occurred at the intersection over a 5½-year period. In July 2025, two fatal crashes occurred within just three days, prompting SHA to temporarily close the MD 405 crossover.

Although temporary safety improvements have since been implemented and the crossover has reopened, county officials continue to advocate for a permanent solution to reduce the risk of future crashes.

The proposed long-term improvements include construction of a J-turn and partial closure of the existing crossover. These changes are intended to improve traffic flow and reduce dangerous crossing movements at the intersection.

The estimated cost of the project is between $3 million and $5 million, with an anticipated timeline of three to four years once funding is available.

Through this request, the commissioners are urging the state to prioritize funding for a permanent solution that will improve safety for residents, commuters and visitors traveling along this corridor.
The letter also requests continued state funding commitments for the planned replacement of the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center, which would be constructed at the former Eastern Pre-Release Unit property in Church Hill.

Water Main Installation Along Main Street in Grasonville Expected to Begin in November

Queen Anne’s County Sanitary District is preparing for a water main installation project along Main Street in Grasonville, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin Nov. 1, 2026.

The project will install a new water main in the eastbound lane of Main Street, beginning near the U.S. Route 50/301 Exit 42 area and extending east to the Chester River Beach Road overpass.

Construction will be completed using a combination of directional drilling and conventional open-trench installation. The section from approximately Exit 41 to Exit 43A near Queenstown Bank will be directionally drilled. The remainder of the project will use conventional open-trench construction. Work is expected to begin with the directional drilling portion of the project.

Construction is scheduled Monday through Friday, excluding major holidays. Directional drilling operations are expected to take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., while open-trench work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Motorists can expect some traffic disruptions and are encouraged to allow additional travel time when work is taking place. Traffic impacts will vary depending on the location but travelers can anticipate partial lane closures with flagging operations. We will contact homeowners and businesses along the eastbound lane directly if there will be an impact to accessing their driveway.

Drivers are asked to use caution, reduce speeds and follow all posted signs and directions when traveling through the work zone.
The project is expected to continue through 2027, with the current contract establishing a completion date in mid-October 2027.
Properties located along the new water main route will not be required to connect to the public water system solely because the new main is being installed. Existing properties may continue using their wells unless a well completely fails. Connection requirements may apply to new development.

Queen Anne’s County will provide additional information as construction progresses, particularly when work moves into new areas or when significant traffic impacts are anticipated.

Project updates will be shared through Queen Anne’s County Government’s website and social media channels. For questions or concerns, contact the Department of Public Works, Sanitary District 410-643-3535.
