Before most people arrive at the hospital, EMS professionals are already there -- assessing, treating, comforting and helping make sure patients get the care they need.
This week is National EMS Week, and we’re taking a moment to recognize Urbandale’s EMS staff for the important work they do every day.
They respond when people are scared, sick, injured or in crisis. They bring medical skill, steady hands and compassion into unpredictable situations. And their work makes a real difference for patients, families and our entire community.
Thank you to our EMS staff for showing up, serving well and helping keep Urbandale safe.

On Saturday May 16th members of UFD attended the annual Iowa Emergency Medical Services Association (IEMSA) Memorial Ceremony in West Des Moines. Eight EMS providers across the State were recognized this year. The ceremony included guest speakers, naming of the honorees being added to the memorial, and a Helicopter Fly Over by Unity Point Health Life Flight & Mercy One-Des Moines. Former EMS Asst. Chief Rob Light was recognized at the ceremony, and his name was added to the memorial wall. Chief Light passed away on June 19, 2025 not too long after retiring from UFD. His name and service are now permanently memorialized at the Iowa EMS Memorial located in front of WDM Fire/EMS Station 19 located at 8055 Mills Civic Parkway.
