ATTENTION ALL WILDLIFE LOVERS!!
Yesterday we responded to a call for 12 baby ducks at JFK Elementary school in Blackstone.
We got in the van ready to help this mother duck out! Mama mallard hatched about 5 babies that ended up being stuck in the court yard while occasionally falling into a storm drain last year.
Mama mallard was flying back and forth from a pond to the court yard all day, not understanding why her babies wouldn’t follow her!
Fun fact!
Baby ducks are considered precocial, meaning babies eat on their own almost immediately after hatching, this also means the parents don’t feed them, all the parents need to do is protect and direct the babies!
The difference this time around is that the storm drain is now covered!
Why did we do this?
Baby ducks can only go for so long off of left over egg yolk after hatching without proper resources.
Baby mallards need to be taught by mom how to eat algae, small fish, aquatic plants, small insects, and seeds! In the court yard there were little to no bugs and nowhere near enough natural resources for these babies to survive.
Knowing where mom was and that their was tons of food, water, and shelter there (a walking distance) we where ready to gather these 12 babies and take them to their intended home!
We used nets very gently to capture these babies, got them into a box to then walk them to their mother, you can see mom hear those babies and rush to their aid! You even see a couple babies go straight to eating until realizing mom was there!
If you ever have any questions or find a wild animal in need, contact your local Animal Control Officer or licensed Rehabbers.
NEVER touch wild animals regardless of if they are old, young, sick, or injured without given instructions from a licensed professional, almost if not always, accidentally of course, more harm is done for the animal than good if you do.
Enjoy the nice weather that is on its way, and keep us in mind if you ever find animals in need of help!
