Last week, a group of Valdosta Middle School students visited the Historic Lowndes County Courthouse to explore local history and architecture. They excelled at the architectural scavenger hunt and even stepped into courtroom roles to act out trials!

Our calendar is full of school groups touring soon, and we look forward to welcoming more students to the Historic Courthouse! ๐Ÿฆ

Hurricane Isaias Update ๐ŸŒ€ | Thursday, October 8, 2026

There has been no significant change overnight in the expected impacts for Lowndes County. Hurricane Isaias continues to strengthen in the Gulf, but the current forecast does not indicate a significant threat to Lowndes County. We will continue monitoring the system as it moves inland Friday night into Saturday.

๐ŸŒง Heavy rainfall and localized flooding remain our primary concerns, with the heaviest rain expected Friday into Saturday. Current forecasts indicate 2โ€“4 inches of rain, with locally higher totals possible.
๐ŸŒช Isolated tornadoes are possible, particularly Friday night into Saturday.
๐Ÿ’จ Gusty winds are possible, but significant tropical-storm-force winds are not currently the primary concern for our area.

Weโ€™ll continue monitoring closely with our friends at the US National Weather Service Tallahassee Florida, and provide updates when they are avaiable.

Stay aware. Stay prepared. Donโ€™t panic.

Earlier today, the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners and Lowndes County Fire Rescue officially celebrated the opening of the new Fire Station 4 on Stewart Circle in North Lowndes by uncoupling the fire hose, a fire service tradition similar to a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Station 4 will serve the rapidly growing Old U.S. 41 and Mineola area with both fire and SGMC Health Emergency Services EMS support, helping position emergency responders closer to the residents, families, and businesses in this growing part of our community.

Funded through SPLOST, the new station represents a public investment in safety and in the continued growth of Lowndes County. As our community grows, so does the need for the facilities, equipment, and resources that allow our first responders to serve effectively.

Todayโ€™s celebration was about more than opening a new building. It was about investing in our community and ensuring our firefighters and EMS personnel are ready to answer the call when our residents need them most.

Weโ€™re proud to welcome Station 4 to the Lowndes County Fire Rescue family and look forward to the many years of service this station will provide to our community. ๐Ÿš’
