We invite everyone to celebrate banned books week this week. We have several displays highlighting some of the most frequently challenged books. We’ve had wonderful conversations with patrons about these titles. So many are surprised by how harmless many of the titles are and wondered what issues anyone could possibly have with titles like Where the Wild Things Are. The picture books in general are probably the most surprising to everyone. I particularly like the comments that suggest they would have supported banning those books when their teacher forced them to read it during high school! Many of these books were in fact required reading in schools until recently. Stop by and check out our display, read a challenged book, and take a look at the flyer of statistics regarding book bans and challenges, and see what all the fuss is about!

VBPL has been prepping for spooking season and working through our closet of horrors. There are a lot of relics and artifacts that don’t always have a lot of information accompanying them. As we work through these items, we will be pulling some out for display and also posting them both online and at the library to try to obtain information and ensure they are properly preserved. If you know anything about the items posted, please share or stop in to tell us more.

First up is this felt banner that was lovingly made by someone for the library. What we know: the public library symbol was created on 1978 (what a great year!), the White House recommended the symbol as a national emblem to help promote libraries in 1979, and finally it was formally adopted by the Public Library Association in 1982. The federal highway department began using the symbol on street signs in 1985. So, it’s safe to assume someone made it for us likely after all of this had occurred.

Do you know who made this? Either way, stop by and check it out!

It’s our monthly UNO Night tonight. The competition is fierce. Children are cruel and they play the version of uno where you can stack draw four cards and force people to draw 8, 12, 16…you know, review your multiplication tables and you’ll get an idea of how relentless these children are. This is a multi generational event, so everyone plan on joining us for the fun and brutality! 5:15-7

Hoosiers are hurting after more than a week of historic storms and record flooding. Some libraries have suffered greatly, including our not so distant neighbor, Yorktown Public Library.

If you are a library lover, if your life has been improved and supported by the services of libraries, if your child has benefited from summer reading programs, or you’ve just saved a little by being able to borrow books instead of purchasing them, then I encourage you to donate to Yorktown.

Very, very rarely do businesses and/or individuals carry flood insurance if the property isn’t in a flood plain and flooding has stretch so far beyond flood plains all over the state. For this reason there will be tremendous need and lots of opportunities to donate. If you wish to support businesses and individuals with their losses, please donate through vetted sites. If you need help determining if a donation link is safe, please stop by the library and we will be happy to help.

You can safely and securely donate to the Yorktown Public Library through the link provided.

Join us for the inaugural meeting of a new VBPL adult book club, Let's Taco 'bout Books! 🌮📖

On Wednesday, August 26 at 6 pm we'll gather to TACO 'BOUT The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. This gem of a novel is presented exclusively through letters that detail one woman's journey through self reflection. It's a quick read and offers something for everyone. Best of all, it's currently available at VBPL!

Oh, and it's BYOT - bring your own tacos! Hope to see you then!

Please note that the library closes at 5 pm on Wednesdays and will remain closed to any other activity during book club.
