Join us Friday October 2nd at 4:15pm for Teen Council.

We will be making sugar skull bases out of sugar, meringue powder and water!

Ingredients and Supplies:
-6 cups granulated sugar
-¼ cup meringue powder (helps the sugar harden)
-⅓ cup water
-Plastic skull molds (front and back pieces)
-Royal icing for glue and decorating (powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water)
-Cardboard pieces and parchment paper for unmolding
-Gel food coloring

1: Mix the Sugar
Combine the granulated sugar and meringue powder in a large bowl. Slowly add the water, mixing thoroughly with your hands until the mixture feels like wet beach sand. Test the texture by squeezing a handful; it should hold its shape without being overly wet or sticky.

2: Pack the Molds
Firmly pack the damp sugar tightly into your skull molds, pressing into all the details. Use a flat edge or piece of cardboard to scrape the back of the mold completely flat. Place a piece of parchment paper and a piece of cardboard over the open side of the mold, then carefully flip it over. Lift the mold away gently. (Optional for large 3D skulls) Once the surface starts to firm up slightly, you can scoop out some damp sugar from the center of the back halves to make them lighter and speed up drying.

3: Dry the Skulls
Leave the molded skulls resting on their cardboard pieces to air dry. Let them dry for 6 to 8 hours or completely overnight until they are hard to the touch.

Join Cover to Cover Club at the Van Nuys Library starting this weekend!

Read, earn and enjoy! The In-N-Out reading challenge runs from Saturday, October 3, through Saturday, November 14! Children ages 4–12 can sign up at the Van Nuys library and read their way to a free hamburger or cheeseburger from In-N-Out Burger. Children who are not yet reading may participate with a parent or guardian who reads to them.

To earn an achievement award card, each child must read five books or 300 minutes at their reading level. Reading logs should include the titles of books read or the number of minutes completed and must be signed by a parent or guardian. Each reader may earn up to three achievement award cards.

Children must be present with a parent or guardian when redeeming an achievement award card. Ask your librarian for details and pick up a reading log today!
