On October 7, 2026, at about 3:15 p.m., Vancouver Police responded to the 3500 block of SE 164th Avenue regarding a reported kidnapping. A woman called 9-1-1 to report that her husband had gotten into a vehicle in Portland with four males in a black Suburban. The men had approached him and asked if he wanted to make some money, explaining that they needed him to cash a check for them. The victim agreed and got into the vehicle but became concerned for his safety and was not allowed to leave. The vehicle traveled into Vancouver, and the victim was able to provide his location to his wife, who relayed the information to dispatch.

Vancouver Police and the Washington State Patrol responded to the area and located the vehicle traveling on SE 164th Avenue toward SR-14. Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained four occupants. The Washington State Patrol located the victim on foot a short distance away. He was uninjured.

Akeem J. Mattis, Dennis D. Nelson, Corey D. Jenkins and Jerome T. Boyd were arrested and booked into the Clark County Jail for second-degree kidnapping.

Just before 5 a.m. on August 31, a flagger working at a construction zone in Gresham was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver didn't stop, and the flagger later died from his injuries.

Gresham Police identified the vehicle as a white 2025 Toyota Camry and determined it was registered to a Vancouver woman.

On September 2, Gresham Police asked VPD to check an address for the vehicle. Officers found the Camry parked outside an apartment with a damaged windshield, damaged driver's side mirror and red dried droplets on the front bumper.

VPD Officers contacted the vehicle's owner and detained her until Gresham Police detectives arrived.
While Vancouver Police were waiting at the apartment complex, an auto glass repair technician showed up for an appointment to repair the windshield of a Toyota Camry. Officers stopped the repair, secured the Camry and assisted Gresham detectives with obtaining a warrant for the vehicle, which was seized as evidence.

As part of the investigation, Vancouver Police also located Ring camera video from September 1, showing the suspect examining her damaged windshield and speaking with an auto glass repair company.

On September 29, a felony warrant was issued for Courtney McKee for Manslaughter in the First Degree. The following day, Gresham Police contacted VPD about the warrant and arranged for McKee to turn herself in.

On September 30, VPD officers took McKee into custody and booked her to the Clark County Jail where she awaits extradition to Oregon.

McKee faces charges for:

๐Ÿ”น Manslaughter in the First Degree
๐Ÿ”น Manslaughter in the Second Degree
๐Ÿ”น DUII
๐Ÿ”น Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver Leading to a Death
๐Ÿ”น Reckless Driving
๐Ÿ”น Reckless Endangering

This case highlights the great coordination that took place between law enforcement across state lines! We are glad to have been able to help our partners at the Gresham Police Department make this arrest.

On October 5, 2026, at around 9:45 p.m., Vancouver Police responded to NE Andresen Rd. and NE Van Mall Dr. for the report of a collision involving two vehicles and two pedestrians.

The driver of a Toyota RAV4 was traveling westbound on NE Van Mall Dr. with a green light when the vehicle was hit by the driver of a Jeep traveling southbound on NE Andresen Rd. after running a red light at the intersection. The collision caused the Jeep to flip and strike two pedestrians who were in the south crosswalk on NE Van Mall Dr., crossing with the signal. One of the pedestrians, a 34-year-old female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The male pedestrian, 43 years old, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Jeep, Noah Merchant, 26 years old, was arrested for DUI, Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Assault, and Reckless Driving and was booked into the Clark County Jail. His passenger, a 20-year-old female, was arrested for Minor in Possession.

The Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing the investigation.

It may seem like an obvious reminder, but itโ€™s an important one: secure your fi***rm when youโ€™re not carrying it.

Between 2021 and 2025, 551 fi***rms were reported stolen in Vancouver. 53% of those fi***rms were stolen from vehicles, either from a vehicle break-in or a stolen vehicle.

A few simple reminders:

๐Ÿ”น Never leave your fi***rm unattended in your vehicle
๐Ÿ”น Keep your fi***rm secured in a safe or other locked storage when youโ€™re not using it
๐Ÿ”น If youโ€™re transporting a fi***rm, keep it secured and out of sight
๐Ÿ”น Take your fi***rm with you when you leave your vehicle
๐Ÿ”น Consider using a fi***rm lock for an extra layer of security

It only takes a few extra seconds to secure your fi***rm, and it can help keep it out of the wrong hands! ๐Ÿ”’
