Through our partnership with the Northwest Justice Project (NJP), Cowlitz Tribal members in Washington State can receive a free one-hour consultation with an attorney for non-criminal legal matters on October 20, regardless of income.

Both virtual and in-person appointments in DuPont, Washington are currently available. A pre-screening is required before an appointment can be scheduled. To request an appointment with the Northwest Justice Project on October 20, please complete the following form: https://bit.ly/4ztpFVR

“Just block them” may not be an option when someone shares children with a former partner. Parenting arrangements can require ongoing communication, even after leaving an abusive relationship.

That contact may be used to demand information about the person’s private life, send harassment disguised as parenting messages, or create disruptions that affect work and daily routines.

Understanding the history and pattern behind these interactions matters. What looks like a disagreement over parenting may be part of an ongoing attempt to control the parent who left.

When someone tells us about harm in a relationship, our response matters. Questions like “Why did you stay?” or comments like “They’ve always been nice to me” can make it harder for that person to continue the conversation.

“Thank you for telling me” is a place to start. Let them decide how much to share, keep their story private, and follow up without pressuring them to make a decision.
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we can practice listening in ways that make it easier for people to speak honestly about what is happening.
